A wastewater overflow has occurred and is affecting the Awaiti Place drain and the Waimapu estuary.
The overflow originates from a private residence where a cross connection has connected a wastewater drain with the stormwater system.

Tauranga City Council is investigating the cause of the cross connection which may have been in place for some time, allowing small amounts of sewage to leak into the drain and estuary.
Water testing is being carried out and health warning signs are in place at the at-risk areas.
