Tonnes of rubbish dumped in Wairoa

Two and a half tonnes of rubbish including electronics, sheep guts, and a rotten pig's head was recovered from the Wairoa River yesterday.

The Bay of Plenty Regional Council clean-up discovered 18 tyres, batteries, car parts, computers, televisions, construction and demolition waste, household rubbish and a rotten pig's head along a 200metre stretch of the river.

Two tonnes of rubbish was recovered from a 200metre stretch of the Wairoa River.

Pollution Prevention Team Leader Annabelle Ellis says the worst affected area was the layby alongside the river off Te Puna Station Road.

'Six sheep guts, skins and heads were also recovered from the river following an earlier complaint about dumping into the river two weeks ago,” says Annabelle.

'It would appear sheep were taken for meat and were stolen from nearby farms. Police were alerted at the time, along with some adjoining landowners.

'With the whitebait season starting it's really appalling to see our beautiful rivers and streams treated like sewers and dumping grounds. We are trying really hard to improve water quality, but the real solution is someone stepping forward to identify the culprits,” she said.

'These sheep will be a big loss for farmers as they were all heavily in-lamb ewes. The people responsible obviously have no regard for animal welfare, people's property or the environment.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council, which shared the cost of removing the rubbish, has erected signs in the area warning of fines of $500 and prosecution for anyone caught dumping.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council Utilities Environmental and Compliance Officer Ilze Kruis says council faced sky rocketing bills for illegal dumping.

She urges people to report any dumping, and ensure they record details of vehicles, people's clothing and time of day so that a prosecution can be made. The council recorded about three cases a day of illegal dumping, with a major dumping of tyres, carcases and other rubbish on No.4 Road Te Puke recorded recently.

'People need to speak up, and communities need to stand together to stop this happening in their neighbourhoods, especially in remote areas. The high cost of cleaning up is coming out of their rates,” she says.

Any suspicious activity or illegal dumping should be reported to police or Bay of Plenty Regional Council's Pollution Hotline on 0800 884 883.

Why can't they put secret cameras in trouble spots?? These can be hidden from view now, and scumbag dumpers would not even suspect a camera was present as you need intelligence to suspect anything!

The Bay of Plenty wants to take a leaf out of Queenstown council, if anyone is caught littering no matter what it is whether it be lolly paper or cigeratte butt the offender is fined on the spot if caught. The council employ's wardens that are not scared to issue fines out for the offenders. You can go into Queenstown's district and you hardly see any rubbish about the area.

We are our own worst enemies, this is bloody shameful, along with the dumping of rubbish around the lakes industrial area, and many other out of the way places, its an absolute disgrace, why is not all rubbish/re-cycling collection part of our rates, are people so poor they can smoke and drink, and spend money on entertainment, but have no concern for the environment or themselves, lazy selfish jerks, catch them and make them clean it up!!!!!!

Wairoa is one area where rubbish is deposed at leisure. Have you looked at Tenth Ave and Edgecumbe Road where there is a walkway leading to the Archery Area down the bottom. That walkway at the top is just littered in rubbish it is unbelievable. NZ clean and green is just a joke.

Why doesn't the council put more effort into preventing the problem rather than trying to ‘penalize' the obviously already poor residents of Tauranga? Start with Non Organic Waste days.' Who cares' if it gets collected by scavengers? Someone's rubbish is someone else's treasure and it saves council money if it gets taken away first. AND….. Bring back the free weekly recycling bins!!!!!!! It is a start anyway.
