Tauranga City Council is doing an about u-turn on rules prohibiting council candidates to plaster their cars with electioneering more than four weeks before the election cut-off date.
Council decided at today's Strategy and Policy Committee meeting to allow election signage on vehicles following criticism from candidates the rules were vague and should be amended.
TCC candidates Mike Baker and Gail McIntosh.
Tauranga City Council communications manager Frank Begley says the committee adopted an amendment to the policy that excludes election signs on vehicles from the four week election signs restriction period.
Under council bylaw candidates are prohibited from places election signs before September 14.
This law will no longer apply to election signs on vehicles, but Frank says these vehicles cannot be parked on the side of the road for the primary purpose of displaying an election sign. This is still an offence under the Traffic and Parking Bylaw.

Good one - now lets hope the candidates come up with some flash looking signage. I want to be entertained!
Focussing on the things that matter?

Would be great if council could apply the same speed and concern to things that actually matter like evacuation routes and sirens (eight years and counting for a policy to be implemented)
Ok

And how do we propose to decide if the vehicle is parked for the primary purpose of displaying an election sign. Perhaps the new council will come up with a way to stick with a decision once made.
Disappointed

I am disappointed in TCC decision. Rules are rules and if you are going to break them for two candidates complaints then you are wasting your time setting rules. The only plus now is that all candidates can have signs on their cars as long as they are not left parked anywhere for a long period. Does put all candidates on the same footing so the two whinging complainants lose what they saw as an advantage. With their complaints Baker and McIntosh have really shot themselves in the foot which either way the decision had gone.
Impound them
