Lone voice on expenses claims

Tauranga City Councillor Rick Curach's reminder that according to the Remuneration Authority councillors are overpaid have been subdued by council.

The comments were made as part of discussion at yesterday's Strategy and Policy Committee meeting on the amounts councillors can claim for expenses during the term.

Councillor Rick Curach told councillors they were already overpaid at yesterday's council meeting.

In July the government agency that sets mayoral and councillors' pay, recommended a pay cut of $4671, bringing Tauranga City Councillors base salary down from $74,171 to $69,500.

It was going to be a pay cut of $17,500, but the Remuneration Authority considers it will have too great an adverse impact on councillors re-standing and is denigrating for new councillors.

Yesterday Rick said councillors are already overpaid so why claim additional money off the authority in expenses.

Murray Guy rose to the bait, saying he was at his wit's end understanding on what basis councillor Curach thinks they are overpaid.

Chairman David Stewart, who earlier warned councillors to ‘play nice' under the election pressure of the next six weeks, says councillor Curach is entitled to his opinion.

'And so am I,” says Murray.

The expenses include vehicle mileage allowances, air travel policy and communications equipment.

Councillors took issue with the Remuneration Authority's definition of council business in relation to social events. Councillors argue they attend many social events as councillors they wouldn't otherwise attend

Electronic equipment they will claim includes a mobile phone and landline, a PC or tablet, and a compatible scanner and printer.

Councillors will provide their own equipment and be reimbursed. The allowance for land line and broadband is up to $250 each year, plus up to $400 allowance each year for council generated calls texts and data over mobile phones

The pay cuts and the expenses policy take effect after the elections on October 12.

How dare you have a opinion Rick! To which ever councillors are responsible for this comment "Councillors argue they attend many social events as councillors they wouldn't otherwise attend" It is part of the job, much like in other jobs it is in the contract you may have to attend additional functions outside of a working week. Has pick six really come down to Pick Rick.

Rick is right

They are overpaid and the pay has nothing to do with results, all they have to do is keep a seat warm for three years and collect the pay, sooo easy.

Work harder Ric

Stop playing politics Ric. If you were doing your job properly and checking out issues and consulting with people, you'd be doing a lot more than 20 hours a week work as a councillor. If you can only give it 20 hours a week, then have the grace to step aside.

hopefully

Rick was the only councillor who attended a hastily arranged residents meeting two days before Christmas; 3 others were invited, one had good reason not to attend. He also went out of his way to take an interest in the matter raised. If Rick felt it necessary to put in more time I have no doubt he would. I believe he is one of the more honest councillors we have. Good luck Rick.

Rick's hours

At least Pick Rick told the truth about is hours (TCC attending meetings, the rest of them have not even got close to the truth of it and that about sums up everything you need to know about the current "BIG SPENDER" lot in TCC at present, lets get rid of the rest just for that reason + Kaptin Kavemun's reason as a bonus for free reason to evict them all.

Dont pay them at all - then see who does it for the sake of Tauranga.

Heres an incentive: If these councillors all do the job because they care about Tauranga and the community, then let them do it for NO PAY! - Then we will see who REALLY cares! OR Perhaps put their SALARY into an account that cannot be touched until the end of their term - THEN ONLY pay them PERFORMANCE money each week! If they attend a meeting they get paid. If they Actually DO something or ACHIEVE something they get paid. THEN, on the other hand, there must be responsibility to go with the job. If they STUFF UP, or make poor, costly decisions (judged by an elected panel of those who pay their wages) then they should have to PAY for those mistakes. This would soon sort out the economic SUICIDE favoured by some council hopefuls.

Vote for new blood

I have attended numerous Council Meetings and seen first hand how shocking this group is. There are only two that are any good and I should not name those. I just cannot emphasis the need to throw this bunch out and start again. A large number of them are well past their use by dates, have been on Council for many years and still blaming past Councils including ones they themselves were on.
