Discoloured water in city suburbs

Residents in Greerton and parts of the Avenues may notice their water supply is discoloured today.

Tauranga City Council is advising residents there could be discolouration in the water due to unauthorised use of a fire hydrant in Tauriko.

Council advises the water is safe to drink, and anyone with concerns should firstly run an outside tap for five minutes.

If there are further concerns residents should contact Tauranga City Council on 07 5777000.

Council communicaitons advisor Marcel Currin says the discolouration is caused by the unauthorised use of a fire hydrant in Tauriko.

'Natural minerals build up over time in the water supply pipes, which can be flushed into the system by sudden bursts of pressure.”

The Annual Mains Flushing programme normally cleans out this sort of build-up in a controlled manner, he says.

has the so called annual flush not been done, and how can a fire hydrant be used without authority?.

So what is the difference between an authorized and unauthorized use of a fire hydrant? Does this mean that the Fire Brigade must first ask a Bureaucrat for permission to hook on to it then turn it on, while we are at it perhaps the in progress fire could just stop burning a little while until the Fire brigade gets permission to!
