Candidate riled at endorsement

Tauranga City Council candidates endorsed in a private advertisement by developer Bob Clarkson in Friday's Weekend Sun newspaper say it was done without their knowledge or consent.

Bob's advert states new blood is needed in the council and recommends mayoral hopeful Kelvin Clout and candidates Clayton Mitchell, Gail McIntosh, and Matt Cowley for election.

Tauranga City Council candidate Matt Cowley says Bob Clarkson's ideas printed in the advertisement do not reflect his ideas.

The advertisement includes a collection of ideas Bob wants to see, but candidate Matt Cowley says it fails to separate his opinion from the candidates' endorsement.

'It would have been ideal if he had called us first,” says Matt.

Matt believes Bob should have clearly stated they were his opinions and not those of the candidates.

'I've never met him, never contacted, had no contact with him whatsoever,” says Matt.

'I've seen him at candidates' meetings but I have never spoken with him.”

A policy analyst with the regional council, Matt doesn't agree with some of Bob's ideas and policies. The first Matt knew about the advert was from people contacting him asking if he supported the university being developed at Windermere, and an 80metre reclamation along The Strand waterfront.

'It's been resolved the university needs to be in the CBD,” says Matt.

'The more people we can get into the CBD the better.”

Similarly Bob's suggestion of an 80metre extension to The Strand foreshore is not something to be contemplated without talking to all the right people first, says Matt.

'That would have a huge impact not only economically but in relationships as well,” says Matt.

'This is all Bob's opinion.”

Candidate Clayton Mitchell says he's 'quite chuffed” Bob's listed him as somebody he thinks should be in the next council, but there's no story about him and Bob Clarkson.

He doesn't agree with all of Bob's ideas either.

'The way I read it, he's putting these four people's names forward as fresh and new and exciting people to consider for council, and the rest of it was about what he would like to have done,” says Clayton.

It's not approved and he hopes it doesn't get included in his campaign budget costings.

'I don't see anything major with it, but certainly they are not my policies.”

Gail McIntosh believes she's included in Bob's line-up because of a remark she made leaving a recent meeting.

'I've spoken to Bob Clarkson once in the last five years,” says Gail.

'As I was leaving a candidates meeting the other night, I said: ‘I don't know why they are building the university in town, it would be far better to be at Windermere'.

'And Bob immediately said ‘yes of course', and away he went. How did I know that was his pet project?

'I fell off my chair when I read it, I was so annoyed. The other issue is we have to return all our expenses and income. The question is - do we have to put that in when we knew nothing about it?

'I've had a couple of bad facebook comments about it, people annoyed because that's my view. It's not my view. I didn't advocate filling in the harbour.”

Kelvin Clout has quite a lot of sympathy for Bob and what he's trying to do, what he wants to see in terms of progress in the city, and he also had no prior knowledge.

'I told him I don't agree with everything he's said in the ad,” says Kelvin.

'I'm happy enough that he wants good positive action.

Bob's idea of more harbour reclamation was a surprise, says Kelvin.

'That was the one that stood out,” says Kelvin. 'I haven't heard any proposals at all. That was the one that surprised me the most.”

Bob's reaction to the candidates' concerns today is to rescind his endorsement.

'I don't care what they want it's what I want,” says Bob Clarkson today.

'Those four candidates selected and I suggested those things that I did. That doesn't mean in any shape or form that I'm agreeing with it.”

Kelvin's comments are interesting, in light of this article of a few weeks ago: http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/52247-golden-housing-opportunity.html Just saying...

interesting

Looks to me to be a bit of 'smoke n mirrors' here. Mr. C is inclined to do what he wants when he wants so I hope that these candidates are not affect or influenced by this, would be a shame that this endorsement was harmful when they did not know about it.

THANKLESS

Just like to say how ungrateful this guy is... talk about RUDE! and to not even be consistent in his comments... bags NOT.

University in town

I have taught 18-24 year olds at BOP poly and other tertiary institutes. I have found student drinking behaviour to be mostly responsible. The worst behaved drunks were the staff, and especially management, not my students. Interestingly a publican giving evidence at the combined TCC/WBDC drinking policy hearings pretty much said the same thing. The young people were better behaved than belligerent middle aged drunks with their sense of entitlement. Bob does not know what he is talking about. Having a university in town will contribute to a more dynamic city centre and I intend to promote it if elected.

says Matt. 'The more people we can get into the CBD the better.” We'll that may be so but it is spenders we need in the CBD not hard up students who have to watch every penny. Too many shops are closing in Tauranga due to lack of customer spending and high rentals due to high rates and problems with parking. TCC is too mean to have enough disabled parking in streets / roads like Devonport road considering trh aging population of Tauranga we need more than one or two where people like to shop.. Of course the Uni doesn't need to be in the city centre shops and spenders and parking is what Tauranga needs in the CBD not PC correct ideas that abandon realty to the inth degree. Windermere is the ideal place for a Uni it won't impact on parking or shopping in the CBD put there at all. Further accommodation is probably closer than in the CBD. Yes we need a change and we need it now. We need to get id of all those TCC people that misinterpret reality almost every day and cost the ratepayers dearly. Currently the TCC is $500 million in debt sit down and put a thinking cap on and work out how much in interest per year at say 4% TCC is paying in interest per year could it be 20 million a year can we afford more of the same ? I don't think so Alastair Bethlehem

Is nerak on planet Bob?

Kelvin says he will also fully engage with Tauranga's Housing Affordability Forum to make tangible progress within three years. So? Housing 'efficiency' better captures the intention with existing efforts no more than lip service. At TCC we are in a position to significantly reduce the cost and, equally important, the unnecessary stress and constant goalpost shifting. What is nerak's 'real interest, real name?' Just asking?

Bob's story

Looks to me that they will have to declare the cost of the advertisement as it is clearly promoting them and that is not really a good idea.

I say

What a pity Bob didn't stand for council he'd have my vote. The only reason some are ken to establish a university campus in the CBD is because they imagine it would revitalise the CBD. Have a think about benefits to the university to be out of the CBD with room to move unhindered by CBD parking issues, lame duck retail, and city hall.

Poseidon Who?

N show mate, that has run its course and wont be voted in again.

What problem?..really?

Personally I did not interprate the inclusion of these candidates (within the advertisements)as necessarily endorsing Mr Clarkson's views. It would have been preferable to make it clear of this, however, I was more interested in the reaction of one candidate in particular in the ..ahem.. (shame on me) opposition paper,... I think if we are to be that "precious" over one article then I am not at all convinced this is the type of person we will need for strong leadership, however good the financial credentials may be of this candidate I am referring to. I am still reviewing my position with my last "tick"..

Endorsements

Posted on 03-10-2013 08:16 | By Gail McIntosh

I'm always appreciative of unsolicited endorsements as long as they aren't tagged to any policy platforms I haven't voiced. Bob could have worded the advertisement better and still got across his view that new blood is needed in the TCC

I'm glad the candidates affected were able to clear the illusion of alignment with Clarkson up, not that everything Clarkson has said is pipe-dreams, however one point I would like to make is that the current decision on the University site/centre in town been signed off to the poinmay have already been signed off to the point of no quick return. Also, I am for a central Uni site so that Tauranga can become more of a bit of a destination point. We need to keep the Centre vibrant and resist the push to create lots of satellite shopping Centres that compete with the core. Bus services to the Centre of town are easier to plan for for students, workers & all as we must all know Windermere is not well serviced by buses. I love Windermere campus and it may stay a teaching centre for some time yet.
