Tauranga City Council is placing permanent health warning signage near the Courtney Road drain. This move comes after continued pollution there forcing consultation with Toi te Ora Public Health.
Ongoing water samples have shown bacteria there to not to be of human origin.
The permanent signs are being drawn up.

City Waters
Water Supply:
• The Matua Road watermain upgrade is nearing completion with shutdowns completed this week to connect the new water mains. Reinstatement will now be commencing.
• A pressure release valve on the corner of Poike Road and Windermere Drive was replaced this week to return pressure levels to normal for this area.
Drainage
• Material removed from ‘Harrisons Cut' is being used as fill in a short pipe extension to the Sovereign drain in the same area. This job is now almost completed and any surplus material is to be used on other works sites.
• 17th Avenue stormwater improvement earthworks are mostly complete. Phase 2 is due to start which will be the piping of the open drain being done as a joint venture with Classic Builders, TCC and Historic Village.
• Work starts on Monday, May 17 off 5th Avenue and Sheath Street to replace a short length of defective sewer pipe and to remedy two manhole structures that have corroded from hydrogen sulphide.
• Three sewer blockages were attended to this week. Again these were relatively minor blockage incidents affecting local properties. No spills to any waterways. One sewer blockage at Palmers Garden Centre, Bethlehem. Cause was reported as tree roots and was a minor incident.
• Gabion rock basket work to the open stormwater drain is due to start on the Matua Life Care site off Levers Road. The works will stabilize the drain banks on both sides of the drain and protect the adjoining properties.
Stormwater Pollution:
• One pollution incident reported this week involving the spilling of diesel in 3rd Avenue. Clean-up was required but no diesel entered the stormwater system.
Inflow Reduction Project:
• Gully trap inspections and smoke testing of properties in the Pillans area began this week. Affected property owners will be advised by letter before inspections begin. Streets to be inspected are Goods Road, Mana Street, Maxwells Road, Milton Road, Myres Street, Pillans Road, Rutherford Street and Roderick Street. Council contractors City Care are carrying out the initial inspections.
• Council is also currently inspecting homes located in the Orange Lane area of Bethlehem. Affected property owners will continue to be advised by letter before inspections begin.
Parks and Leisure
• Harrisons Cut re-sealing of car park due to begin next week. Fencing will also be upgraded and pohutukawas planted.
• Some large pine trees at Faulkner Park adjacent to Birch Ave are being removed to address safety concerns.
• This weekend a Rip Curl sponsored event will be held to pick up rubbish in the dune gardens. It begins at 10am on Sunday, May 16, starting at the cenotaph and moving east. Open to anyone.
City Projects
• Widening of the last two sections of the Waikareao boardwalk starts Monday, May 17, from Coach Lane south. It will take approximately two weeks. Part of the boardwalk is closed during that time.
• The revitalisation of central parade shopping centre continues with work occurring predominantly at night to minimise disruption of day to day business.
• Water main renewal progress at McLaren Falls Park: 2km of the 4km pipe has been laid.
• The playground at Glenpark Reserve is largely complete. It is usable, but the delivery of the carousel has been delayed until July because of shipping congestion following the volcanic eruption in Iceland.
• The Gordon Carmichael Reserve playground is complete.
• Mount Greens: Both amenity buildings were due to be completed this week.
• Memorial Park drainage: pipes are being put under the miniature railway heading towards the miniputt.
Arataki Community Centre
The Arataki Community Advisory Group is meeting on Monday, May 17 to discuss an update from Council staff on progress of development of the new Arataki Community Centre. This will include consideration of future opportunities for the advisory groups involvement in the design process and ongoing communications for this project with the Arataki community. The group will also discuss opportunities for investment and sponsorship in the new community centre and surrounding environs on Grenada Park.
Transportation
• Welcome Bay Road / Kaitemako Road Intersection: Work is underway to modify the intersection to improve safety. Please pay attention to the temporary signs and take care when driving through the intersection.
• Te Hono Street: Work has started on installing speed cushions and pedestrian refuge islands along with some minor footpath alterations. The changes will improve pedestrian safety. Please take care when driving in the area.

• Bethlehem Township Improvements: Construction of the new roundabout on SH2 at west Bethlehem is continuing. Work on the roundabout is expected to be completed by the end of July. Traffic management and site screens are in place at the new roundabout site but only minimal delays are expected. There will be some minor pedestrian detours in place while service relocation work is done beside the footpath along the state highway. Preparation work will also take place for connection of relocated power supplies to businesses on the southern side of the road. The power supply will not be affected. The work will be contained to minimise disruption to parking and pedestrians as much as possible.
• Wharf /Willow Streets: Work continues in Wharf Street with reconstruction of the road the main focus this week. Wharf Street is reduced to one lane for traffic coming from Cameron Road towards the Strand.
• Maunganui Road: Major reconstruction work on Maunganui Road between Concord Avenue and the Hewlett's Road flyover is continuing. Most of the resurfacing is complete. The remaining work is concentrated near the flyover. Traffic management is in place and motorists should expect delays and use an alternative route if possible.
• Kairua Road Reconstruction: Major road works are continuing on Kairua Road. Some disruption to traffic can be expected at times and there will be speed restrictions in place. The work is expected to take about another three weeks to complete.
• Beaumaris Boulevard/Sterling Gate Drive/Waihi Road Link: Construction continues off existing roads. Until the work is completed, pedestrian access to the storm water reserve at Beaumaris Boulevard is closed. The pedestrian access between Sterling Gate Drive and Waihi Road is closed during working hours. The new road is expected to be opened in July 2010.
• Pyes Pa Bypass: Construction of the Pyes Pa Bypass to link SH29 through to SH36 continues. The new bypass is expected to be open to traffic in 2011.
• Parton Road Reconstruction: Top soil and grass seed is being laid beside the completed sections of footpaths. Final asphalt sealing will follow after the installation of the box culvert which is scheduled for late May. Work is expected to be completed by late May. Landscaping will be done in June.
• Vale Street: Work to reshape Vale Street between Baden Street and Landscape Road to form an overland stormwater flow path during severe storms is continuing. The work is currently taking place between Baden Street and Hinewa Road. Please pay attention to signs and take care when driving in the area. Work is expected to be completed by October.
• Parton Road Watermain: Work to relocate the bulk watermain between Tara Road and Bell Road is well underway. There are temporary traffic lights and a one way traffic management system in place. Motorists are advised to watch for the temporary signals and take care when driving through the area.

• Pedestrian Walkway on The Strand - Moving the pedestrian walkway along The Strand to the outer area of the footpath has been trialled since November 2009. This report reviews the success or otherwise of that trial and brings the matter before Council for a final decision on permanent alignment and timing of the changeover of the pedestrian walkway.
