Reactions from local body politicians named in what is described as a ‘smear campaign' advising people not to vote for them are being described as 'over the top” by city councillor Murray Guy.
A leaflet dropped in Mount Maunganui letterboxes advises electors to vote out Mayor Stuart Crosby, and Mount Maunganui ward councillors David Stewart and Wayne Moultrie.
A leaflet criticising councillors and candidates has been dropped in letterboxes.
The anonymous author also advises against voting for two at large candidates - Mike Baker and Gail McIntosh – as well as incumbents Bill Faulkner, Larry Baldock, and Tony Christiansen.
It has created annoyance from many of the councillors and candidates named in the leaflet to 'avoid like the plague” who say it is dirty tactics and those responsible should come clean.
Mayor Stuart Crosby who is said to have 'responsibility for TCC debt” in the leaflet says the people behind it should front up.
'People like a hard fair fight, but when it gets to that level it's getting below the line.”
City councillor Murray Guy escaped mention in the leaflet for the Mount Maunganui/At Large voting catchment, but is expecting perhaps another one to surface in the Te Papa/Welcome Bay area.
'I wasn't comfortable with some of the comments,” says Murray.
But he believes the Mayor and other councillors mentioned need to take it on the chin, as it is all part of politics.
'This leaflet is just another form of intimidation and offensive behaviour. On this very rare occasion I'm not the recipient.”
Disparaging, inaccurate, dishonest, and politically motivated anonymous comments are a part of being in local council, says Murray.
'Any day of the week I can pick up social media, print media and find offensive stuff, it's just part of being in politics unfortunately.”
People generally use anonymity because they themselves fear retribution, bullying and intimidation, says Murray.
'The rights of democracy are greater than the feelings of the Mayor – or myself. Seriously, I'm prepared to put up with the abuse that we get that is clearly politically motivated skulduggery. I'm prepared to accept that because there is a bigger cost.”
The Mayor disagrees with Murray's statement about abuse being part of council – he says the pamphlet is part of the rough and tumble of electioneering.
'The feedback I'm getting is it has not been well received,” says Stuart.
The pamphlet comments on Stuart being on holiday in July and missing out on the annual plan meetings, which is not true. He took holidays earlier.
'I timed it between a low business time in council,” says Stuart.
'I didn't go in July because I was here in July, chairing those meetings.”

Some of the remarks made in the pamphlet about some Candidates, sadly is not too far from the truth.
July meeting not the problem

Mayor Crosby, the issue shouldn't be if you were here in July or not, but why no transparency on council decisions e.g council debt increasing 600%; rates skyrocketing; and still no sirens in the Mount and Papamoa and utter destruction of Coronation Park (with Stewarts and Moultries support). If you have proven leadership, stop all the BS and open up the books and prove it! Tauranga needs to vote in a new mayor (but definately not Mike Baker, he proved how useless he was when a councilor).

After reading the actual sheet itself- I think this is the worst "Gutter Politics" I have seen in a very long while.Maybe have a look at who is NOT slagged off and work out who is likely to be behind it ??

If there is information on this leaflet to cause such a stir, surely there must be some truth to it

This leaflet does not say "don't vote for them, vote for me", it just says "don't vote for them" and that is the key for me to suggest it is from someone who cares about this city and knows what they are talking about. Well done whoever wrote it, and thanks for the tips.

Seems odd through, if it was an at large Councillor then why bother with the ward candidates, if someone from a ward then why bother with another ward or at large? There is something odd here, perhaps look at the groups or associations of candidates and see which one has been left out, that will be the answer perhaps?
Publicity stunt

Would not be surprised as that is the best way to get the media attention, the story will come out in the end I am sure.

hurts. glad someone had the presence of mind to issue this leaflet so that those who just vote for the people they recognise or see pics of the most on the roadside, think for a second!

The comments about me are phrased in a derogatory way even if partly correct. It starts 'currently not running any accounting practice'. That's true as I sold my practice in February. It infers I have been saying I still am in practice. I wouldn't be able to do a exacting job as a councillor if I was still in business. I was surprised to have been targeted as the others are all existing or past councillors. Are the authors afraid of financial accountability and transparency?

Did the council tell us how much they paid for the speedway? How often does the council go into a closed meeting? The Council hides significant information from rate payers but is on a witch hunt to find out who does not agree with them. The council also has the power to crush businesses and ruin peoples lives so I don't blame the leaflet producer for hiding.

Looks to me that the leaflet adds a lot of accountability and transparency, that manifeasts itself from the reactions of many named and shamed. The good old saying of "Where there is smoke there is fire ..." about covers it. Perhaps the real issue for you sadly is being associated with such a tarnished lot, tends to not help the election cause for you I am afraid.

leaflet and the comments here, I am constantly amazed at the number of braindead people in Tauranga. The author and distributor of the leaflet is nothing more than a gutless wonder - a coward not prepared to stand behind his/her statement but choosing to remain anonymous instead. Slander is of course a crime. Captain Sensible [there's a misnomer if there ever was one], if you are prepared to cast your vote according to what was written in the leaflet, you're probably an even bigger fool than you yourself realised.

To date we have seen two variations of the leaflet, with the Otumoetai-Pyes Pa Ward yet to rate a mention. chapter three might still be in the pipeline!?

Yeap, this is gutter politics. The coward should front up. Who has the most to gain out of this?

Jo public as they get to know something more than the usual sanatised party political stuff that is meaningless and will change in an instant if there is a vote in it.

Yeah, who for sure mate, just look who has all the airtime out of ti so far, the pedistal looks rather crowded if you ask me. The usual suspects are out in front of the media clammering for attention on it.

Good info but a bit 'coarse" perhaps but the message and intent is very much clear. Helps lot on voting, the reactions since by some candidates now makes the vote clear as fry now.
Bring it on

I think that a group of knowledgeable individuals should be able to be gathered together, study the candidates and report independently on the credentials of candidates, ability and experience. If this is not the case then all voters get is the self professing dribble that is completely meaningless and self indulgent, it is of no use to anyone.

Are you hoping that there is a Matua leaflet? Sounds a bit like it, would hope so as I did not think that the one I saw was all that bad. Maybe not all correct but still an interesting read.

People are talking about it, 'if it is true ...' then it is a shocker and some the behavior of some and the results they have not achieved in between.

Just seems to bring out the best in the candidates available doesn't it, pleased to see that it stirred things up a bit, if nothing else has come of it then that was good anyway.
How right it was

Maybe the "named and shamed" did not like it but clearly the voters did like it and it made all the difference when you look at the results, Grainger and Crosby were the only ones who survived the rest as named were dealt to and some.

Well 70% clean up, 30% to go and a spare as well. Looks to me that my job is almost done.
