Outdoor drinking review

A police recommendation to shut down outdoor drinking on The Strand after 1am is to be discussed as part of a report being considered by Tauranga City Council on Tuesday.
Tauranga police also want people in the outdoor 'licence to occupy' areas to remain seated while drinking.

Drinking policy for The Strand is under review by Tauranga City Council.

These areas, the footpath, which moves pedestrians away from the buildings and towards the roadside at night, has been trialled since November as a means of night time management of drinkers on The Strand.
The report's writer, environmental compliance and monitoring manager John Payne says publicans generally consider the trial a success.
Some want to change the time of the furniture changeover, and a decision has to be made about the street furniture at the southern end of The Strand where angle parking bays cause a loss of footpath area.
Some of the bar owners will be attending the meeting.
