$1m Rena fund recipients named

A stone penguin sculpture at Mount Maunganui, residents of Motiti Island and Tourism Bay of Plenty are among recipients of a $1million Rena Recovery Fund.

The $1million fund is a donation from Mediterranean Shipping Company – the charterers of the cargo ship Rena when it hit Astrolabe Reef on October 5, 2011.

Debris and milk powder washed ashore from containers off the Rena.

Although MSC was not responsible for the operations of the ship when it grounded, its managing director of MSC (Aust) Pty Ltd, Kevin Clarke, says the company was concerned about the costs imposed on the community following the environmental disaster and has donated $1million towards local organisations.

'We want to recognise and thank those community organisations which put so much effective volunteer effort into putting things right again,” says Kevin.

The project has approved a number of applications including funding the stone sculpture of the penguin release at Leisure Island, unveiled on Saturday. Carved from Oamaru stone by Bay of Plenty artist Peter Cramond, the sculpture depicts the release of penguins that had been covered in oil during the disaster.

It was placed at Mount Maunganui Main Beach to commemorate the second anniversary of the Rena disaster on October 5.

A total of $366,000 will go to the Motiti Island community, as the community most directly and most significantly affected by the grounding and subsequent oil spill. The money is allocated to the various island groups that submitted applications.

The next largest grant goes to Tourism Bay of Plenty to assist in implementing initiatives to promote tourism businesses that suffered losses as a result of the grounding.

Other organisations receiving funds include volunteer coastguard, lifeguard services, fire brigades, and community trusts whose individual efforts played a major role in mitigating the environmental impacts of the disaster.

SunLive is still awaiting details of what clubs and organisations received grants and what the funds will go towards.

The fund is chaired by former Chief District Court Judge Sir Peter Trapski, with committee members including Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby, Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Ross Paterson, BOP Regional Council Chair John Cronin, Iwi representative Te Awanui Black, and the shipping company of MSC (Aust) Pty Ltd was represented by Kevin Clarke.

what about the general public at the loss of their beach and to the ones that were cleaning up 5 days before any kind of response, im not happy Tourism Bay of Plenty received funds to post out as this should have been done in a individual basis case by case

I am dissapointed!!!

why did I miss out??, and I guess Tourism B.O.P have to get money to pay their wages from somewhere, since the Rena well is starting to empty, we better have another cash cow come along soon!!

JUST REMEMBER

Posted on 07-10-2013 17:16 | By yikes61

when they shipping company put in their resource consent application to leave the remains of the ship and rubbish where they lie, its is EVERYONES responsibility to put in a submission telling them to remove all the crap. Dont be fooled by small gestures, this is another chip away at the public and govt to save huge amounts of money!

why Motiti???

I don't see why the Motiti mafia should get anything. Looks like the culture bullies demanded it or the 'r' word comes out.

Conflict of interest

Tourism BOP getting funds from the council heads. Maybe the same council heads will get trips to promote the region all paid for by Tourism BOP.

Mediterranean Shipping Company had no liability

Posted on 08-10-2013 12:51 | By Murray.Guy

The $1million fund is a donation from Mediterranean Shipping Company, totally removed from any liability for the Rena and it's operation, the impact on out reef and coast. The Mediterranean Shipping Company had cargo on the ship and no liability, anymore than any of us who choose carriers of our mail and freight. Anybody could apply to the fund. This donation has NO bearing on any past , present or future matters relevant to the Rena, it's owners and the recovery. Show me a Council, a company, other individual, that offers up a million dollars with absolutely no liability to do so, legally or morally. As for TBOP, their use of the donation will benefit all in our region, and not just 'those in the know'.

think the POT could have also donated more of their some $76m profit to the local community

Election bribes

Election bribes more like it - no one picked up on that? pity the judge had to be the token non-conflicted, nice timing boys- none of you are to be trusted in my opinion but see your friends did nicely. Murray not a peep from you either. PS did'nt tourism BOP get some other Rena compensation. I didn't even see them picking up any oil.

Agree with Murray

This is an extraordinary gesture by Mediterranean Shipping Company and a rare change from 'those in the know' receiving all the benefits.

Pose for the camera

Impeccable timing from this lot. No idea who really deserved acknowledgement for cleaning the beaches - not that they care. It's a case of 'who will vote for me' as opposed to whose is most deserving. Good one you bunch of hypocrites. Smile for the camera.

Iwi representation

Can you check Mr Blacks credentials? Did Iwi vote for him or was he self-appointed? Which Iwi?

that's an easy one

I can offer an answer to johndoe.. Mr Black is self-appointed. Iwi nominated and agreed on a person (not Mr Black) and put HER name forward and low and behold, Mr Black appears centre stage in the headlines - self-serving, self-appointed Mr Black.. Thats the truth of the matter.. Stupid people who put him in BOPRC have undone 10 years of progress. Thanks for nothing.. By the way, have you banned corexit yet Mr Black? Good luck with that..
