Two bars on The Strand are able to delay shifting their outdoor furniture until 10pm, from the standard 4pm, after last week Tauranga City Council agreed to trial this.
De Bier House and Coyote bars are able to stay open later after their owners argued successfully that shifting the furniture at 4pm was losing them money, as their space was then too confined.
De Bier Haus manager Tom Gibson is happy his bar is able to keep its furniture setup outside until 10pm instead of 4pm like other bars on The Strand.
Other bars on The Strand will continue to shift their furniture at 4pm as bar owners, managers, police and councillors are happy with the policy.
"The system seems to be working reasonably well as far as we are concerned," says Police inspector Carl Wright St Clair.
"It has shut down a number of the flash points along The Strand."
A police suggestion, made at a meeting last week, to close the outdoors licence to occupy areas at 1am and force outdoor patrons to sit down was not taken up.
The outdoor areas are currently open until 3am.
A suggestion from some bar owners that The Strand be closed to traffic on Thursday to Sunday at 8pm was also not taken further.

The decisions and meeting refered to (above) specifically focused on the public walkway and the location of furniture for dining. Further consideration in a couple of months will be given to associated suggestions and issues relevant to the night time management of the Strand, including (not limited to) lighting, standing on your head to drink, restrict traffic access to taxis and emergency vehicles, one way traffic only, ....
