Liquor bans are to be extended to a list of perceived trouble spots in the district following a review of the Tauranga City Council's liquor free public places bylaw.
The additions include the Wharepai and Tauranga Domains, the Carlton Reserve, the Fraser Street reserves, Waitaha Reserve in Welcome Bay, the Merivale shopping centre and nearby Surrey Grove playground.
More public places will have liquor bans following a Tauranga City Council strategy and policy committee meeting.
Liquor bans will also be introduced in Papamoa at The Domain, Harrisons Cut car park, Stella Place, Taylors Reserve and boat ramp, Motiti Reserve and Topaz Drive reserve.
It is the first review of the bylaw since December 2008, when the current 24/7 liquor free bans for the central business district, Mount Maunganui and Memorial Park were introduced.
The additions were recommended at the council strategy and policy committee meeting on Tuesday.
Concern was expressed about liquor ban areas "breeding like speed humps", but discussion on making the entire district liquor free was reined in by reference to Law Commission recommendations that such bylaws be only added where and when the limitations on individual freedoms can be justified, and where there is high volume offending or disorder to support it.
The police also spoke against a blanket ban, with Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair saying it would be impossible to enforce.
