TCC to negotiate leaky scheme

Tauranga City Council is looking to negotiate with the government over the leaky homes issue, after agreeing in principle to its latest financial assistance proposal.
It is for the government to pay 25 per cent, the council 25 per cent and the homeowner 50 per cent of leaky home repair bills. The council would only be liable where it was the building permit certifier.

Mayor Stuart Crosby says the Tauranga City Council is looking to negotiate further on the government's proposed financial assistance offer for leaky home owners.

"We have not approved the government's proposals," says Mayor Stuart Crosby.
"We just want to go to the next step and negotiate with them."
The council has agreed to work with the government to finalise the details of the proposed financial assistance package, and will delegate chief executive Stephen Town and the mayor to work with them and other authorities to agree on the details.
The costs to council can't be determined until the details are settled - at which point the council will consult with the community via the annual plan consultation processes.
Agreeing in principle was moved by David Stewart saying Tauranga has to stay in the loop.
Tauranga is among six municipalities involved in this discussion process with government. The Auckland territorial local authorities and Christchurch have agreed to continue with negotiation process with the government.
