The Tauranga City Council is advising people to continue avoiding contact with flood waters and that of the Wairakei Stream waterway, until the results of water quality testing show clear.
Water samples for testing will be collected on Tuesday, June 8.
Tauranga City Council is advising people to avoid contact with water from flooding last week. Picture of last week's Papamoa flood supplied by Emma W.
The storm rain event on Tuesday, June 1, caused up to 50 calls advising of flooding and required the City Care contractor to attend.
The majority of the flooding was to roads in the Mount Maunganui south and Papamoa areas where the rain intensity was greatest. This also caused some of the sewer network to become inundated with stormwater causing two recorded sewer overflows. Two house basements were also reported flooded, one in Taylor Road the other on Papamoa Beach Road.
This information from Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin, for the week beginning Monday, June 7, published below.
City Waters
Water Supply:
• There are planned water shutdowns due to occur on Olympus Grove and Mirrielees Road.
Drainage:
• One sewer blockage was attended to this week.
• Sterling Gate storm water pond has been cleaned of aquatic weed and silts.
• Recent road flooding near the Maleme Street transfer station was caused by silts and aquatic weed in the open drain. This is being cleaned.
Stormwater:
• A pollution incident involving the discharge of sediment from a building site. Contractors on the site were required to erect silt fencing immediately and clean up silt from the pavement and kerb and channel. It is a good reminder to those involved in construction works to ensure sediment controls including silt fences and catch pit filters are installed before it starts raining.
• A second pollution incident involved the illegal dumping of fuel following a mixed fuel incident at Tauriko Service Station. Service station staff followed the correct procedure for an incident, however, the offenders pushed the vehicle into a neighbouring driveway and attempted to drain the fuel into bottles. Around 20L of fuel was spilled in the process onto the grass. The offenders were made to dig out the small volume of contaminated soil and replace it. Where the incorrect fuel is put into a vehicle the mixed fuel must be siphoned or drained and collected for disposal. Fuel should never be drained into sumps or directly onto the ground.

• The new public toilet facility at Cambridge Park is finished, although the park is still under development and is not open to the public at this stage. This is the site of the new Tauranga BMX club track which is still being constructed and not due for completion until the end of the year.
• New park information signs have been developed for McLaren Falls Park. They identify walking tracks and other areas of specific interest. They are currently being manufactured and are due to be installed by the end of the month. The development of the signs is part of the implementation of the reserve management plan for McLaren Falls Park.
• The first walls of the Tauranga Indoor Sports and Events Centre have gone up and will continue at about 10 panels per day. There are about 300 panels to erect.
• The Waikareao Estuary boardwalk improvements are now complete and the boardwalk is open to the public.
