Warden praised in ACC attack

A Tauranga parking warden is being commended for his actions in helping to restrain an enraged man attacking staff at Tauranga's ACC branch.

The parking warden, who only wants to be known as Peter, was patrolling past the ACC office on Grey Street when a woman emerged calling for help about 1pm Wednesday.

Tauranga City Council parking warden Peter helped restrain an offender until police arrived.

Peter entered the office to find a man punching a staff member and pushing computers and equipment off desks.

The 'out of control” man had jumped across to the staff side of the desks in what is described as a frenzied attack.

Although Peter did not wish to comment on the incident, council's parking and enforcement team leader Kevin Nally says Peter was courageous in his actions.

He quickly assisted the ACC staff member to restrain the man and managed to radio to base to request police assistance.

The ACC staff member had placed the offender in a headlock and Peter restrained his arms until police arrived.

'A third person, unidentified, then helped to restrain the man until police arrived,” says Kevin.

Peter estimates they had to hold the man like that for about 10 minutes before police arrived.

By this time council says ACC had gone in to ‘lock-down' with all the other staff retreating behind locked doors.

About five police cars arrived at the Grey Street office and police arrested the man and took him away in handcuffs, says a witness.

ACC spokesperson Stephanie Melville told SunLive that no ACC staff were injured in the incident.

'The office was closed immediately following the incident but reopened at the normal time Thursday morning for business as usual. Police are now investigating the matter."

Thankfully, Kevin says Peter came out of the incident uninjured.

Did he complete a course in restraining people before using commonsense and courage and helping others? Well done Pete! Just goes to show you dont need training for everything, including spotting dodgy tyres...

Well Done

Well done Peter - just a thought, if the offender was physically capable of jumping the counter & then physically attacking someone - he must be physically well enough to work then? No need for ACC - do you get ACC in jail?
