$38m TECT funds to community

Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust, known as TECT, is putting aside $38 million of its budget to invest in the community.

The Trust today announced $38m of its Annual Distribution Plan for the coming year will go to consumers and community organisations.

TECT is the primary sponsor of the Tauranga-based rescue helicopter.

Trustees are proposing a $28.4 million tax-free payout to consumers via its cheque scheme. Eligible TECT consumers will receive a cheque of at least $425 each in November 2014. This is an increase from the minimum $400 pay-out last year.

'The cheque distribution provides an injection of millions of dollars into the local economy. The increase in this year's payment reflects the continued value of the Trust to its consumers,” says TECT Chairman Michael Cooney.

Despite a fiercely competitive electricity market, trustees are pleased with TrustPower's performance and are heartened to see that TECT continues to go from strength to strength.

'Community organisations are finding it increasingly difficult to secure funding for their projects and operations with a number of funding agencies being forced to limit their distributions.

'Trustees are keen to continue their support of local community organisations and have increased the level of funding available by allocating a further $9.6 million to TECT's various funding schemes. These organisations are the backbone of our community.”

Trustees invite consumers to comment on the draft Annual Distribution Plan. Submissions should be made here in writing by Friday, 13 June 2014.

Perhaps TECT could get to birds with one stone, pay rates on behalf of all sporting and community organisations and ear mark that money specifically for rates reduction or to pay back some debt.
