Today is Tauranga Chief executive Garry Poole's first performance review where the city council's sole employee discusses his performance over the past year with his employer – the Tauranga City Council.
When Garry arrived from Wellington in April last year, he was the city's third CEO in as many years following the death of Ken Paterson in office in June 2012.
Tauranga City Council CEO Garry Poole will undergo a performance review today.
Garry was formerly CEO at Wellington for 15 years and is currently on a salary of $340,000 per year, the same as for the previous Chief Executive.
As Wellington City Council CEO, Garry Poole was responsible for a staff of 1400 people - and an organisation with more than $7 billion worth of assets and a total income of more than $450 million. Tauranga has a staff of just over 500.
During his time in Wellington, Garry invested in events and social infrastructure while maintaining sound city foundations to deliver a vibrant city that the Lonely Planet guide referred to as 'the coolest little capital in the world.

internal review, it is worthless!!!!!, even if it is external, hot air and posturing will ensue, and nothing will change.

I think that Ken Patterson employed consultants, just like the rest, if that's what you mean by continuing what he started. It's easy to employ consultants but more difficult to make decisions and don't forget the human cost. Councillors seem to palm off the hard stuff to the CEOs then complain and blame whatever the outcome.
What a crock

The Council needs a reality check with salaries, amount if staffing and an investigation done into the organisations they are funding. This has got out of control.
Increases already approved

The Mayor and Councillors have already passed a resolution approving significant increases in the CEO's department, including $100,000.00 for the CEO review which is somewhat intriguing. A common ploy is to dig large dark holes throughout the activity areas in which sit $millions of discretionary spend! Elected Members doubled staff spend amounts early in this term to accommodate this and by majority rejected closer monitoring options. Councillor Robson, what happened? Reduced staffing levels and turner reduces wage increases - not popular by staff! CEO Ken Paterson was forced to used consultants (expert and external) as he was not getting the necessary support from the executive team and Mayor. This became very evident and prompted, what turned out to be, the farcical restructure.
