Finalists go for green glory

Te Puke MP Todd McClay says the two Western Bay of Plenty organisations named finalists for the 2014 Green Ribbon Awards are good role models for the community.

Both Trevelyan's Pack and Cool Store and Western Bay of Plenty District Council have been named in the large business leadership and public sector leadership categories respectively.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council is a finalist in the 2014 Green Ribbon Awards.

'Every year the Green Ribbon Awards honour outstanding contributions to protecting New Zealand's environment,” says Todd.

'Being selected as finalists is a good achievement by these local two organisations and sets a good example for other organisations in Te Puke to place an important focus on environmental obligations.

'It is great to see the range of private and public sector groups that are now making sustainability an integral part of their business.”

Trevelyan's Pack and Cool Store has been nominated for implementing a sustainability framework and has also introduced many environmental and social initiatives.

The company has reduced its fossil fuel consumption and has reduced waste going to landfill from 150 tonnes to 20 tonnes.

The company also has an on-site native bush area to encourage biodiversity.

The Western Bay council has been recognised for its approach to handling biosolids.

Instead of the biosolids from the Waihi Beach and Katikati wastewater treatment plants going to landfill, the council has applied the biosolids to stock paddocks.

The biosolids are then used as a natural fertiliser and soil conditioner on productive farmland.

Thanks to this innovative initiative 100 per cent of the council's biosolids are being diverted from landfill.

The finalists will attend an awards dinner at Parliament on June 16. Winners will be announced in each category, and then an overall supreme winner will be revealed.
