More flood hazard maps complete

The owners of 1460 properties between Omanu and Bayfair now have access to updated flood hazard information retaining to their property.

Tauranga City Council announced today it has completed the next round of flood hazard maps, in the Mount South catchment, and letters have been sent to advise home owners.

The Mount Maunganui South catchment of flood hazard maps are complete.

TCC communications advisor Marcel Currin says TCC has been running accurate computer models to better understand how flooding from extreme rainfall events will affect each part of the city.

"The new flood hazard maps created from this modelling process update flood hazard information that Council already holds about each area."

So far this year Pillans Point, Bureta and Matua catchments have been modelled and the information released to property owners.

Public information days will be held for property owners of the Mount South catchment who wish to discuss the update maps in person.

not....., everything looks lovely on a computor screen, but personally I would rather see a council employee on the end of a bloody shovel in a rain coat, instead of someone in an air conditioned office, pushing a "mouse" around a desk, wasting more ratepayers money, which should be directly put into a stormwater, system, all this information is already on file from the 5 x once in a 100 year floods we have had in the last 15 years, what an absolute waste of time and finance again by Council staff justifying a wage packet!!!!.

Accurate HA HA HA

The computer models were started by Lidar mapping. Lidar cannot penetrate hard objuects, and thus the rest is extrapolated ie made up. The models are not accurate. In some instances houses have been categorised as Flood Hazard potential when there is no such potential. Tell the council this? they are adamant their models are correct and wont even come out with a tape measure, to see they are wrong. Bureaucracy penalising the little man! Have to spend time and money now to fix their mistakes and shoddy work.
