A last minute attempt to derail the construction of the replacement Arataki Community Centre saw the last Tauranga City Council Projects and Services Committee meeting of the current term finish in a rowdy debate.
Murray Guy wants the decision to build the new $3.25 million community centre deferred so the incoming council can make it.
Councillor Rick Curach opposes the Tauranga City Council decision to go ahead with building the Arataki Community Centre.
The resulting sometimes heated debate resulted in a vote split along what is for the current council, traditional lines.
Murray Guy, Bill Grainger, Catherine Stewart, Hayden Evans and Rick Curach want to pass the decision to the next council.
They were successfully opposed by David Stewart, Wayne Moultrie, Greg Brownless, Mike Baker, Stewart Crosby and Bill Faulkner.
The new Arataki Community Centre replaces the soon to be demolished community centre in Grenada Park. It is a design/build project, a methodology espoused by Councillor Rick Curach. Rick was also on the Arataki Community Centre sub committee with David Stewart and Wayne Moultrie which was tasked with coordinating the Arataki community wish list that was tendered for.
Rick joined the vote for a deferment, David and Wayne were vehemently opposed saying the council would be seen to be betraying the Arataki community and builders who have invested money in the design and build process.
The time to make the decision on deferment was two months ago, before it went out to tender, says David.
"I'm struggling to understand what has changed in the last 12 months," says Mayor Stuart Crosby.
Murray said the new council might want to cut costs. He also said he had quotes from other companies several hundred thousand dollars cheaper than the design/built option presented to council.
When questioned about the information he provided on which the quotes were based, Murray said it was publically available information, not the confidential design information that at this stage is the property of the tenderers.

The is a word often used by Cr Guy for a long time, I believe it has been due to a large degree of frustration with the group currently in control of the Council Chambers. Cr Baker has for some reason that is not at all obvious it would seem accidently copied and added it to his repertoire of words at this time, election ! It is fair to say that the word has been used out of context completely by the latter ! Agree with all that you have written, yet another shocking example of blatant abuse of ratepayers, due process and of course yet more debt. No surprise Cr D Stewart came out in favour of it, he just wants votes.
