The park next to the Brewer's Bar in Newton Street is chosen as the preferred site for Bay of Plenty Badminton's new 12 court facility.
The councillors' decision was greeted with applause from BOP Badminton supporters at Tuesday's city council strategy and policy committee meeting.
It means BOP Badminton can proceed with fundraising for the $2.3 million facility, which is expected to be operating in 2013.
BOP Badminton has been unable to begin fundraising until they have a site, says organisation president Delwyn Cooper.
"It's a bit catch 22."
The planners chose the Brewer's field ahead of the nearby Tatua Reserve also on Newton Street, because the Tatua Reserve will require more earthworks, which would be an added cost for BOP Badminton.
Building on either reserve will require a public consultation process. Under the reserves' current management plan, no provision is made for buildings, and the plan change requires public consultation.
Councillors objected to handing over public land at a peppercorn rental for a facility that will draw customers away from ratepayer provided facilities.
They also questioned the need for a purpose-built badminton facility when the Tauranga Indoor Sport and Exhibition Centre is expected to draw many indoor sports players away from existing indoor venues, opening the possibility to convert one into a dedicated badminton hall.
But BOP Badminton was commended for undertaking the whole project without council support - apart from the guarantee of the site.
Wayne Moultrie said issues councillors raised about the particular site were covered by the wording of the resolution, that it is an agreement in principle, which doesn't preclude other site options.
The Soper and Tatua Reserves are the survivors of a Mount Maunganui Borough Council policy of requiring industrial developers to provide reserves, ensuring a scattering of green spaces in industrial zoned areas. Other reserves in the former Mount Maunganui commercial zone have since been sold off by Tauranga City Council, with the proceeds going towards the land under the Mount Greens project, Mayor Stuart Crosby told the meeting.

A few votes and a few million dollars ...

Our regions premier recreational complex is totally ignored for reasons unknown. The Baypark complex has the space for the building and the carparking. Elected members made the decision, by majority, to support the Newton Street location following incomplete and unquantified input from staff and Mayor Crosby, not the least being the assertion that badminton wouyld be charged $11-12,000.00 per year ground lease for their new building (False). Arpart from a few votes for an insecure Mayor and a few Councillors, what was the real agenda as logic and common sence played no part in this decision. Baypark has significant advantages over the Newton Road site. * It is a multi purpose recreational site with existing parking and enhanced security. * Construction costs would be less with reduced parking and consultation costs. * Construction would begin sooner with the reduced consenting processes. *If the Newton Rd site is not needed as 'green space' it should be (could be) sold and the millions secured used to reduced debt and or invested in Baypark facilities. Wierder and wierder ...

Why do we need this as badminton is adequately provided for already.Every outfit seems hell bent on climbing into ratepayers for funds or assets to plug their own little pipedream - would they ever consider getting off their a...s and helping themselves ?Not likely when Council staff and TCC encourage them not too. By the way pray tell what green reserves have been sold and the funds applied to Mount Greens Mayor Crosby ??

What is this bit of nonsense all about? I thought all sports were to be located at in the new Blake Park sports redevelopment, otherwise what is the point of it all? Councillor Guy's misgivings are well founded. What are facilities like: - Tauranga Sports & Expo Centre (TISEC) Mount Sports Centre QEII Centre College Gyms / Sports Centres Community Halls Memorial Halls supposed to be used for then? They more than adequately serve the purpose now and in most cases cater for badminton. Like it or not, Badminton unfortunately like Bowls is a dying sport in New Zealand. This pie in the sky will need maximum TECT, Hilary Commission, BayTrust funding, etc. Once again, it's not a community charity! Not a mention of any Badminton Club savings, building funds or cash contributions. Having regard to the above, there is no need for this new facility at all. It's the usual brigade of the 'we want, we need” syndrome at work - it only takes good green reserve space out of the industrial area for a concrete building or tin shed. If it's a huge tin shed badminton needs, then put it on a farm, not in the middle of a very busy industrial area away from the other Blake Park sports. Incidentally, is it the right size and capable for use as indoor tennis courts? IT LOOKS LIKE MORE ELECTIONEERING NONSENSE IN THE SAME VEIN AS: 17.8% Rates rise staff review pie in the sky, by guess who? Baypark Track renewal $500,000 Mount Central Parade upgrade $1 million Arataki Community new Centre $3 million The Elms purchase $400,000 Has the current TCC administration got any other rabbits in the hat or poison pills to spring on ratepayers before the Election? Hope it's not a zoo or a permanent circus, other than the one currently at City Hall. Let's stop these rorts and get some accountability, folks - next week simply vote onto Council those candidates who will rein the out of control bureaucrats in and stop the wasteful bleeding of funds.
