Two towers too many

Tauranga City Council is opposing an application by Two Degrees Mobile Ltd to build a cell phone tower on land at Maungatapu beside an existing Vodafone cell phone tower.

The contested site at Maungatapu.

The land at 1 Taipari Street is zoned residential, but is a narrow tongue of land between State Highway 29 and Taipari Street on the corner by the Maungatapu overbridge.

High voltage power lines pass over the site.

The application is opposed by council planners on the grounds that two cell towers will clutter the skyline, and create 'adverse character and visual amenity effects”.

Environmental planner Shannan Miles says the application relies heavily on screening provided by existing vegetation – that is not included in the Two Degrees site, or able to be controlled by Two Degrees Mobile.

Shannan also says two nearby homes in Avocet Avenue will be adversely affected with the additional tower resulting is a more than minor effects on their visual amenity.

Today's resource consent hearing is before independent commissioner Dorothy Wakeling.

Are people aware that consent has already been given to many communications towers across the region on commercially zoned land, they just havent been built yet. So why didnt planners consider visual effects in a residential area at Matua, oh thats right, as a small row of shops was zoned commercial, its allowed and the visual effects........ nah not interested! TCC planners need to check on what they have allowed already before they put in a token opposition.

Guess that is what we get for more mobile companies, they all want a tower. There is one good aspect about "twin towers" they have a habit of not being there for long ...
