Newly re-elected Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby is backing David Stewart for a third term as the city's deputy mayor.
Stuart Crosby says he would be happy to have David Stewart return as deputy mayor.
David has served alongside Stuart as deputy mayor for the past six years.
The person who fills the job will be announced when the new council meets for the first time on October 26, which is also when the mayor and councillors are sworn in.
At the meeting nominations for deputy mayor will be called, then each councillor votes for their preferred candidate and the job is given to the person who has the most support.
Stuart is backing David to continue in the job if he decides to contest the position.
'I've had a good deputy mayor over the last two terms. He has been very competent,” says Stuart.
Both men say they have enjoyed a strong working relationship over the past six years.
'The deputy mayor is really there if I'm out of the city or I have a conflict of interest and he can sign documents, or represent myself if I'm unavailable or there's two occasions I have to be at the same time,” says Stuart.
David would not say if he wanted the job for another term and says he is waiting until the issue is discussed at the October 26 meeting.
He says it is crucial that whoever fills the deputy mayor position is able to form a strong relationship with the mayor.
'The deputy mayor and the mayor must have a good working relationship and I think whoever is going to be deputy mayor has to be very loyal and has to be trusted.
'So I'll wait to have a discussion with the new council and just see what's what, I think. It deserves a full discussion.”
Stuart says there are councillors he would like to see become deputy mayor if David decides not to continue in the job.
'There are two or three or four that are capable of doing the job. I don't want to mention names.”
David says he has found the position ‘very satisfying'.
'There's quite a lot more work involved than being a normal councillor. But I've enjoyed the privilege very much.”

Still got the same mayor but surely a change at the top is REALLY needed! Am sick of the ineffectiveness of the previous council.
Done deal

This was always going to be, after D Stewart said he wouldn't stand for mayor if S Crosby was standing for mayor. Maybe Murray guy's musings were right? Perhaps it's time for a limit on the number of terms they can sit. If they can't achieve enough in two terms, give someone else a go.
What is full time?

In David Stewart's pre council election hand out he states he is making a full time commitment. Elected to Council, elected to the Health Board now deputy mayor. With all these extra duties how can he meet his commitment to being my full time council representative? Perhaps the extra income received by David for each of these roles helps to ease the burden.
YES MAN IS BACK ... OH NO
