Market moves to Historic Village

Bethlehem market will move to Tauranga Historic Village on March 15, leaving only two more market days in Bethlehem town Centre.

Town centre management put the Lions Club on notice late last year, and the popular market was instructed to move to make way for a planned redevelopment.

The Bethlehem market is moving from the town centre to a new home at Tauranga Historic Village.

'We are just waiting for the contract to come through,” says market organiser for the Bethlehem Te Puna Lions, Alf Holst.

It's the third move for the market which started out in the carpark at the former Otumoetai Trust in Bureta Park, which is now a supermarket.

'Development keeps chasing us out,” says Alf. 'Every time we get somewhere they develop it and we have to start all over again.”

The village used to be home to the farmers' market, which moved to Tauranga Primary School a few years ago.

'It was before the council did their flood protection stuff and they had all sorts of gunk around the area, so they had to shift,” says Alf.

'But it's been all modified now and they reckon it won't flood, so we will find out.”

There's room for up to 200 stalls at the Village and lots of unused parking over the weekend.

The last market at the Bethlehem Town Centre is on Sunday, March 1.

Bethlehem Town Centres is set to change, expand and redevelop, with final plans expected to be announced in the next two or three months, says town centre manager Andrew Wadsworth when spoken to in January.

'We had to be proactive and give the Lions group a heads up about possibly moving on, rather than leaving it to the last minute,” says Andrew.

'We've been quite open with them with regards to potential downsizing of the market and utilising other areas in the centre, but they have made the decision to make a clean break because they want to keep it at the same size.

'Unfortunately we won't be able to accommodate them with the plans we have in place.”

Should be good for the Historic Village. It's now up to the people of Tauranga to get down there and support.

The venue is perfect for this activity providing delightful surroundings, family friendly, on the bus route, and great parking. the only scary part, 'We are just waiting for the contract to come through,” says market organiser for the Bethlehem TePuna Lions, Alf Holst. Tauranga City Council staff, The Historic Village and contracts are known to somehow vary significantly from mutually agreed conditions when the ink hits the paper!
