TCDC to change Cemeteries Bylaw

The Thames-Coromandel District Council's Cemeteries Bylaw is being reviewed to align with current industry standards.

The new draft Cemeteries Bylaw has updates on casket sizes, plot pre-purchase, types of monuments and memorials, plus clarity on a number of issues not covered in the 2007 bylaw.

It also makes clear the different services each cemetery in the district provides.

The council manages 13 cemeteries within the district and of these, seven are currently open for burials, while six other cemeteries are no longer operational.

Most cemeteries operating in the district cater mostly for lawn plot burials, which means locals must not plant vegetation or place structures, borders or any items on the plot itself.

Public consultation is now open and will close at 4pm on Monday, March 9.
