Councillor recounts mould tour

The two events are 28 years apart, but walking through abandoned and mould infested parts of Tauranga City Council's headquarters evokes memories of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, according to one current councillor.

Earlier this week councillors, including Steve Morris, were given a guided tour of council's Willow Street premises to gain an insight into just how bad the outbreak of toxic black mould, or Stachbotrys, really is.

Following the tour, including the administration area and library, Steve took to Twitter, saying: 'A first look inside TCC's leaky staff building. The latest of a few little legacies left to us by previous councils.”

Attached to this post was photos of the inside of the now vacant administration block due to the mould outbreak, some two months on from the December 15 outbreak.

The photos show patches of the black mould along the floor and the skirting boards as well as areas of the ceiling, which is swollen from leaking.

Speaking to SunLive about the tweet and the images, Steve says having finally been allowed to have a look, comments to him regarding the mould outbreak being minimal are well off the mark.

'I have worked in some pretty grotty places as well as some pretty flash places overseas,” says Steve. 'But none of them have water pouring out of the ceiling or walls on a dry day.

One of Steve's photos from inside the council building.

'There was thing kind of Chernobyl feel. It sort of felt like we were going on a tour through reactor four.”

Taking aim at previous councils, Steve says the leaky building issue is just one of a number 'skeletons” left by the previous groups.

He says along with the mould issue, the current council are left to deal with replacing an outdated IT system, a number of failing sea walls and the Mount Cosmopolitan Club, left vacant since 2009 when council bought it in an arrangement clearing the way for the nearby Mount Greens project.

Surveyors are part way through surveying the mould infested building to identify where the water was leaking in, and will be finished the process sometime in March.

Steve says there will be a number of options presented to council following this report, but high on his list of priorities would be ensuring the building is well and truly water tight and seismically strengthened.

Drama, or fact?

'But none of them have water POURING out of the ceiling or walls on a dry day." To me that means a rather LARGE volume of water, is that true? How many litres/hour? And is it a fair comparison to evoke the Chernobyl disaster? I am sure ratepayers would like the TRUTH, Steve. It is something rare from council. Useless to blame councils past, we know they were no good, we can't hold them accountable, more's the pity, so we have to move forward and do the right thing for the ratepayers NOW.

An insult to the true sufferers of Chernobyl?

Any comparison of this leaky problem to the deaths and suffering from Chernobyl is ludicrous. I challenge Cr Morris to test random buildings in Tauranga for black mould. I believe many buildings will have it, including all those leaky home in which people live. I challenge Cr Morris to also release video of what he calls water pouring out of ceilings and walls on a dry day. Having had some hope in the new council I now despair every day as to what new crisis and crisis management team will be instituted at the expense of the long suffering ratepayer.

Quick.......

get the buckets, its pouring out of the ceilings. Look at all the puddles. Would love to know why the council staff can't do a report on the building, after all they are the ones who sign off on all the rest of the cities. Oh that's right, they probably aren't allowed, as they are the same people who have watched it get in the state that it's in. Hope they are going to publish the Prendos report. It should make some good reading. Not worth the money though. Any local private Building inspector would have completed their report by now at a fraction of the cost. But no, we have to go to big companies who charge a fortune and take forever. Money, money, money. Come on TCC sort it out. You are representing the rate payers. Stop wasting our money, and playing blame games.

Stop with the Chernobyl comparison Steve Morris. Thousands died in that disaster and continue to get sick and die. There is no analogy. None. And don't try to shift the blame to "previous councils." There is only one Tauranga City Council, and it's council staff who missed the black mould problem.

Chernobyl?

Really? And this is a councilor making that comment? How dare he! How DARE he! I don't get angry easily but this is 150% unacceptable. Obviously he has no idea of what happened in Chernobyl and his ignorance is appalling. Why are such ignorant people in a position of responsibility that affect the entire city?

Remain calm, breathe

Before succumbing to computer-borne "outrage" syndrome -The comparison was not to the suffering of the people of Ukraine and Belarus, particularly the children born and those yet to come. Nor the estimated 300,000 Chernobyl 'liquidators' who heroically worked on the clean up. Rather it was as part of a sentence in the interview in which I said "I don't want to over state the comparison, but the emptiness of the once busy council building and the staff momentos still in situ looked like the photos people post when they tour reactor four." @sojourner I'm not as ignorant to know that my future wife was living in an area that received a small dose of Caesium 137 in 1986 from the fire. @analyst I'm happy to show you where the water is literally pouring in like a shower head. Email me and we'll book a time to see together.

Chernobyl......

here was I thinking, no one could be that arrogant or stupid too even contemplate that comparison, and we have people like this managing our rates?.

A rather silly councillor.

Enough with the hype Cr Morris. You're just embarrasing yourself and all those you might represent.

If you strip the interior of virtually any office building bare like this, it's going to look like the buildings in chernobyl. D'OH!

you post pics/video of the streaming water Steve, so we can all see it. We are entitled to know so we can make up our own minds, not have them made up for us.

Steve, You surprise me ...

The leak like a shower, despite being summer, in all likelihood is either a plant for the gullible benefit of Councillors (emphasis new) or an air-conditioning pipe that needs maintenance or both! Like a shower I suspect is somewhat overstated, like a drip may better reflect reality! I would very much like to see the 'shower' and extent of mould, perhaps get a register of interest and make a group up. Thank you for the offer.
