Council awaits mould report

The full extent of the black toxic mould that spread throughout Tauranga City Council offices will be revealed in the coming week, as staff shifts climb above 790.

A pair of independent reports are nearing completion some four months on from the outbreak of stachybotrys black mould in early December following complaints of sickness from staff.

A full-scale investigation of the city's mouldy headquarters left large parts of the building and office space empty, with staff relocated to various points in the CBD.

Operation Clean project manager Terry Wynyard says since then, a final total of 798 shifts involving staff have taken place from areas that tested positive.

Large numbers of staff needed to be shifted twice - once to temporary safe areas such as Baycourt and council chambers and then into long-term leased accommodation in the downtown area.

He says the final shift came recently, with staff moved into the library building and parts of the civic building, while council chambers and a number of large meeting rooms remain operational.

A water tightness report from Prendos and a seismic strengthening report from Beca consultants are expected in the next week to 10 days, around March 20, says Terry.

The Beca report will then be peer reviewed before both reports, with recommendations sent to the council for consideration.

'It's more of wait and see for the current time,” says Terry.

'We have done everything we can and are just working through various processes that we have to work through.”

Terry says the Prendos investigation included an exterior examination of the civic building where dye-coloured water was pumped into anything that looked suspicious in order to see where water had emerged inside the building.

And as far as he knows the test went well, but the full results won't be revealed until the report is released.

Council plan to use this year's $1 million rates surplus to help fund unexpected costs.

Shift Costs

I would like to know why all staff had to have brand new desks in the shift to temporary offices and will they have to have another set of new desks when they eventually shift back into TCC Building?

We will be paying.

I'm sure we are all looking forward to seeing the full reports on this. After all, we are all going to be paying for whatever the fix will be.

Really quite stunning....

How absolutely pathetic this whole situation is, and we have to trust these muppets at TCC to have a huge (and ever growing) effect on our lives in one way or another. Surely it must worry us when a building issue is realised many, many years ago and yet with all the "expertise" in the organisation it gets to the current situation, where you can bet the "independant" (ratepayer funded) reports will include a total rebuild...you can see it coming..the ratepayer has suddenly lost any likelehood of a rates reduction or additional and appropriate improvements to our city by having the surplus gauged..AND doubtless will have the pleasure of funding the new project doubtless to house a very plush mayor and CEO office. Again...PATHETIC..!!

Originals please to elected members in full!

For the sake of credibility Mr Mayor and elected members, PLEASE insist that the 'independent reports' in their original form are provided to you and in the public domain, that you manage the findings / reporting process.

Murray Guys comment ironic?

I think Murray Guys comment on credibility a bit ironic since the Council he was a part of bought a Speedway business in what seemed to be a secret process. I don't remember seeing any public report on that. Then there was the big "cash injection" to Baypark. But back on this topic I think this whole mould issue is a big overreaction. But I guess it has to follow process and isn't Mr Guy a big fan of process?
