Village Radio stalwart and board member Bonnie Leonard says the community radio station is on the edge of collapse following failed promises, an unresponsive mayor and unaffordable rent.
Bonnie Leonard.
This announced despair comes after a meeting held at the Historic Village on Thursday where Mayor Stuart Crosby discussed the village's future with stakeholders.
'We've gone through all these changes with promises, promises, promises, from the council and we've never had any direction whether it's a tourist destination, whether it's a community place. I don't know what the devil the village is supposed to be anymore,” says Bonnie.
'We've been fobbed off for years really, beyond promises, and we have been finding it considerably harder and harder being the only tenant left that is being run as a volunteer organisation.
'We have got no income and now we are being charged rent by the council. We are being charged $700 a month and that's hard to find.
'The rent has killed us. We can't meet it this month nor next month, and we are in debt and we will probably have to close.”
Village Radio has been in the village for 27 years, and is the last original Historic Village tenant from the days when the village operated as a working museum. The radio station needs foot traffic to generate income and the village's current focus on community and social welfare groups is not helping it or the retail tenants.
Bonnie, a Village Radio board member, confronted Mayor Stuart Crosby about Village Radio's future at a meeting between the council and villagers on Thursday.
'He didn't want to know,” says Bonnie.
'He said we had internal troubles at the radio which was our own fault – which is not true. It's a waste of time, banging your head against a brick wall isn't it?”
The rent was imposed two or three years ago, says Bonnie.
The 30 Village Radio volunteers have since attempted fundraising ventures, but find raising money for museum piece communications gear is not glamorous.
'We would be about 100 places behind kids with cancer, people with disabilities and all those sort of things.
'We've tried fundraising, we tried all different organisations we have been turned down – ‘Very sorry we know you do a good job and so on, but...'
'Which is really sad. We've been there such a long time and had a really valuable input into the community, and a lot of elderly people just love us as a lifeline. So, there we are.
'We are all feeling quite despondent because there are 30 volunteers that give their time as we run seven days a week. We have quite a lot of tourists that call in who think it is fabulous. In fact, recently one American tourist wanted to buy us.”
Village Radio has been waiting to see which way the village is going to go, says Bonnie. 'There was a message that it was going to go back to being a working museum, tourist attraction which would be a wonderful thing.
'It could be a magical place, and it's a wonderful destination for jazz festival things like that and it should be humming, and full of lovely little ‘boutiquey' things.
Cromwell, a central Otago town of 4000 people is building a historic village to attract tourists, says Bonnie.
The tourists dropped off at Tauranga's village from the cruise ship this week were just wandering around.
'Poor things, they were wondering what they hell they had come to, I think.
'It needs to be managed properly and taken out of the council's hands. I think they would like to set a match to it, and never see it again quite frankly.
'They do not appreciate that it was all given to them. People donated the buildings, they donated time, they donated money to get that off the ground. It was a real city project and the council had very little input. It was all given to them and as a result of course, they don't appreciate it.”
Mayor Stuart Crosby was in the Waikato Friday morning and could not be contacted for comment.

No surprises there, then

Disappointing though this will be to many people, it is hardly surprising. Council's handling, or rather mishandling of the Historic Village has been going on for a long time. The village currently has no recognisable identity whatsoever. It is a disappointing place to visit because the wrong mix of tenants have been allowed to occupy it. The Historic Village needs to be returned to the sort of living museum I gather it was originally intended to be. For that you need boutique craft operations, entertainers and exhibits from both the past and the present. The radio station is entirely appropriate in this context, but welfare organisatoions are not and should be moved into more suitable locations. But we shouldn't be surpised at the Mayor or council's reaction. The city did re-elect the same old faces who have let this situation develop over the last few years.
Noel Nicholls Dream

What a pity Noel Nicholls and Archie Pemberton were shafted so long ago. Noel had the dream and if he had been allowed to continue with it the village would be totally self sufficient. The railway, residents worried about a bit of smoke etc, was an assett and what a day the tourists would have had if the village was like it use to be. Charles Haua could have trained young guys up to run the blacksmith shop, it makes me cry to see how far the village devloped from a little section on the corner of Cameron Road and either Harrington or Hamilton Street. Come on some entrepreneurial person, take it by the horns and run it.
This has little to do with the council

It's to do with management and a failure to attract advertisers. $700 pm for rent is peanuts to raise! If they cant manage this then its amazing theyre around at all.
Walk away

why do people have this attitude that the council is responsible for bailing out every failed oddball idea? In case you havent all realised it yet "the council" equals "us". its not some mysterious benevolent wizard with a bag full of endless free money. it is ordinary people chipping in rates year after year to get basic community services. if you want a radio station, face up to the commercial reality. if the numbers dont stack up, it doesnt happen.

I don't think anyone is asking for handouts - What I think anyone connected with the village is concerned is to start getting some positive support from the council to give the village direction and a future - believe me it could earn a hell of lot more for the ratepayers of Tauranga than many of the white elephants that have been promoted at huge cost to the ratepayers over recent years! When people like Des Ferrow walk away from the place because of lack of purpose from city hall then we are at a low ebb - the village has huge potential some of which has been demonstrated at the last two Jazz festivals - it could be just the same on an ongoing basis if only there was the will from our city Fathers. For reasons that bewilder me, therte seems to have been a desire from the powers that be to make sure the place fails - the way in which Noel Nicholls was crucified seemed to me to have been a put up job which signaled the demise over years of 'could'nt care less councillors towards this great city asset - Probably find they want to sell off the land to help pay for some of their cock ups!

It would be a shame if the radio station was to close as it brings a lot of joy to many elderly people as it plays music from there era.Still we live in the present and we are reliant on the young for support so if that doesn't come ta ta radio station.
Good on you Bonnnie

Good on you Bonnie for having the courage to tell it like it is.
Awesome Village

I think Bonnie Leonard is telling it like it isn't! Village Radio has a problem with Village Radio and are blaming Village tenants and Council for the fact that they can't operate collaboratively. The Village is a fantastic place to be and most of the 50 odd tenants and their customers would tell you the same - stop the misrepresentation Village Radio! Your running costs would not be that hard to fundraise for - if sports clubs can get funding so can you - it's not all about "welfare" groups getting priority. I hope some of your members attended the fantastic fundraising conference held by Exult at the Village - well attended community event attracting large numbers of participants many from outside Tauranga. Hmm there's a concept - a community event! Like the many successful events already held at the very awesome Village!

Bonnie take heart the bulk of TCC ratepayers and citizens are on your side.Remember idiots always drag others down to their level then beat them with experience usually always bad.Mayor Crosby wouldn't have a clue about the Village and probably couldn't care less.He has hardly got anything right over the past 6 years why start now.

get rid of the council from unessential services

I love the way you are thinking DOGSBODY - more people like you PLEASE. Council This! - Council That! - bla bla bla the council! REMOVE THEM FROM THE EQUATION Problem solved. Its all you people who keep demanding the council do this and do that that encourages them to interfere and makes them think you WANT them do it. Not just the Historic Village, but EVERYTHING! ALSO you cant ask them to stop interfering in the Village, but encourage them to interfere insomething else - It doesn't work like that - Get out of EVERYTHING except the ESSENTIALS (see if they can do THAT properly) Leave those who are passionate and interested in those other things to provide them FREE OF COMPULSION and RESPONSIBILITY. Then let those who wish to use them pay. Its not rocket science people
