Multi-sports park gains funding

Mercury Bay's junior rugby and rugby league will be taking on their winter season at the Mercury Bay Multi-Sport Park.

This week the Thames-Coromandel District Council approved to over $27,500 of funds to complete minor drainage works and the installation of rugby posts on the Number One playing field.

Turf and drainage issues have hampered any regular play on the fields last season, and the funds will also be used towards a turf reinstatement programme.

"We're looking to the future and can see the http://tcdc.govt.nz/Your-Council/Council-Projects/Current-Projects/Mercury-Bay-Sports-Park-/benefits of this facility long term for our community," says Mercury Bay Rugby Club junior spokesperson Dennis Johansen.

The Mercury Bay Recreation Trust was successful in its application to Pub Charity for funding of rugby goal posts, which did not include installation costs.

Along with the paying for the installation of those posts, the $27,500 will go towards some minor drainage issues around the periphery of the park.

It's expected the rugby posts will be installed in the second week of the school holidays while the drainage work can start immediately.

Representatives from the codes met with the Trust and Council this week for an update on developments at the Sport Park.

The codes were briefed on progress of the turf management, and lighting. The Trust also introduced a possible concept for a clubroom design so the codes could become part of the decision process.

Mercury Bay Recreation Trust Chairperson Bill McLean says the meeting was successful because they needed to engage with the codes.

'Without their support and understanding about what the trust is doing so they can become part of the process.

'All codes who attended the meeting supported the concept.”

The codes will have the responsibility in that whatever funding they can arrange will be included in any clubroom development.
