Fantastic turnout for FAN launch

The launch of the Futureforce Action Network Thames-Coromandel saw more than 150 people pack into the Thames Toyota factory on Wednesday night.

The Futureforce Action Network is made up of employers, educators, government and community organisations committed to creating better education-to-work opportunities for young people.

The crowd was mostly made up of employers wanting to find out more about getting young people into the workforce.

Guest speakers included Smart Environmental managing director Grahame Christian, Toyota Thames manager Peter Manning, and Unichem Heather Moore Pharmacy owner Heather Moore.

A number of young people also spoke at the launch, including pharmacy trainee Darian Staples and apprentice electrician Jake Leopald.

The pair talked about the opportunities they were given and the difference it makes for young people to be given a chance and have someone believe in you enough to invest in your future.

Smart Waikato project manager Linda Caie also gave pointers and tips on future planning, selecting an employee and the importance of induction and mentoring.

Thames-Coromandel District Council chief executive David Hammond says the room had a party atmosphere and many made great new connections.

'We are proud to be one of the partners addressing an issue that is critical to the economy of the Coromandel, keeping our youth in the district.

'If we grow our own workforce on the Coromandel, we grow our communities and businesses and the opportunity for families to flourish - fulfilling the Coromandel vision to be the most desirable area to live, work and play.”

Wednesday night's attendees registered to be partners of the FAN network and now have a range of tools at their disposal.

These tools will help employers plan work opportunities for youth, transitioning youth into the workplace and training and mentoring resources.

'Thanks to everyone who helped make the evening a success,” says David. 'Smart Waikato and Ministry of Social Development, Smart Environmental, TCDC Economic Development Committee, Toyota Vehicle Operations, Marlene Perry and Unichem Heather Moore Pharmacy.”
