Public toilet upgrades start today

Starting from today the public toilets outside Thames' War Memorial Civic Centre will be closed for the next two weeks.

While they are being upgraded there are alternative public toilets at Porritt Park by the children's playground near the Goldfields Mall car park that people can use in the interim.

The current toilets have used domestic and light commercial fittings, similar to those used in homes and offices.

Council says while these have handled the wear and tear relatively well, vandalism and hard daily wear put quite a strain on fittings in a well-used public facility.

'During the upgrade we will be installing more hard-wearing backing boards, basins, cisterns as well as behind-the-scenes upgrades including plumbing and lighting,” says council. 'There will also be new tiling, new floors and new doors.

'This, along with plans for an upgrade of the Civic Centre building, will provide a cleaner and safer environment.”

A new toilet block is also currently being constructed off-site to replace the Porritt Park toilet block.
