Tauranga City Council is the happy recipient of $100,000 aimed at convincing the authority to perform a U-turn on its decision to block funding on the Omokoroa to Otumoetai cycleway.
That is the hope of Tauranga Roundtable members, who presented the cheque to TCC at last night's meeting of the City Directions Committee in Bethlehem.

The cheque is made out to 'Tauranga to Omokoroa Cycle Track” - a project city councillors originally voted against because of the $500,000 cost.
The 5-4 decision to withdraw from a project it had already agreed to in principle sparked a number of critical submissions in council's recent long term plan hearings.
Mayor Stuart Crosby says at this stage, he cannot comment on whether the donation will change their minds.
'There's a number of options,” says Stuart. 'We could stay with our current position, we could fund the half-a-million as requested, or we could reallocate existing resources from within our budget so there is no net difference.
'So those are the three options we will be looking at. We will be going through that process in deliberations from June 3 onwards.”
Councillors Bev Edlin and Gail McIntosh have been in discussion with the service club, which was looking for a suitable destination for $100,000 left over from its now defunct Blues, Brews and Barbecues fundraiser.
'It was gratefully received,” says Stuart.
The Coastal Cycleway project is a partnership with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, who have committed to paying for the Omokoroa to Wairoa section.
Tauranga City will pay for the river to Omokoroa section, with the government footing $1 million for the bridge across the river beside the railway line.

This is just another ploy to suck money out of ratepayers, do the Math, 500-100 still means $400,000 needed, NOT FROM RATES please!

TECT seems very generous with other peoples money these days, perhaps they will come to the rescue. I would rather see their donation go to this cause than those puppies.
Not for everyone

I would hope that a suggestion to push forward on a cycleway will die a fast death. Not everyone in the region is going to benefit from this only a minority. What surprises me is people come up with such hair brain ideas and the council seem to take action. Look at the Hairy Maclary Statues
PAPAMOA COMES FIRST

Provide safe cycling lanes that are NOT flooded in even light rain along Papamoa Beach road from Domain Road through Papamoa East and extend TeAkaroa Drive so as to provide an alternative escape route as well as a safe cycling route for Papamoa East residents including school children first before committing ratepayer funds on the Otumoetai to Omokoroa cycleway
But this is still only 20%

And that is only estimated construction costs. What happens if they find a bone or a couple of mussel shells? And who is going to stump-up for the maintenance costs? You can GUARANTEE that it won't be the 800 cyclists. There are any number of worthy causes that come a long way before a minority groups recreational aspirations.
long...?

I hope it goes through. Will be a great tourist attraction which will bring more money to tga. And will keep people fit and cyclists off the busy roads!

This is how Tauranga "nice to haves should be funded by donations and fundraising by interested parties.
