Strand walkway trial

Councillors took the cheaper of two options when presented on Tuesday with walkway choices for herding pedestrians around The Strand's bars at night.
The council has chosen a 12 month trial of a walkway that's two metres wide and is set far enough away from the kerb so $150,000 does not have to be spent on removing the concrete furniture.

The decision means the footpath will be moved from outside the bar entries, which has become a security issue.
The bar licence areas have effectively been split by the footpath that passes outside their doors and allows the public to wander through between the building and the outdoor ‘Licence to Occupy' areas.
The option to place the footpath beside the kerb will not work along the full length of The Strand because of the concrete furniture.
Policing the LTOs has been an issue for licencees who are charged with controlling the drinking of their patrons, but cannot control who passes through the licenced area.
The two metre wide walkway will pass through the middle of the paved area from Hamilton Street and along to Devonport Road.
The walkway will be set up from 4pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The walkway security is the second measure introduced recently in an effort to control late night drunks. The southern end of reclamation car park is now closed at night.

Why not put a covered walkway over the footpath on the seaward side Safe, dry and the show alone watching the drunks might be worth an admission Fee A roof and a hand rail with exits at all crossings Cheap but maybe to simple
