CCTV cameras rolling

Whakatane's upgraded CCTV network is now live with the upgraded system utilising the district council's fibre optic cable network.

The closed circuit television network provides police with high quality footage useful in all investigations.

Whakatane Mayor Tony Bonne says the upgraded system is a good example of what can be achieved when organisations agree to work in partnership for the benefit of the community.

'The fibre optic network improves the quality of the images, in addition to ensuring stable and reliable connections when compared to the wireless hardware that has been used previously.”

Signage has been put up around the wharf on the Whakatane River, the Whakatane Information Centre, The Strand, Riverside Park, Pak'n Save and other places alerting the public that they are in police crime prevention areas.

Tony says the upgrade enhances a tool the police have in their toolkit to fight crime.

'It will be useful in deterring vandalism such as graffiti, theft from and of motor vehicles, burglaries and will improve safety in the CBD.”

Eastern Bay of Plenty Police Area Commander Inspector Sandra Venables says CCTV provides substantial operational help.

'The cameras are a valuable tool and essentially give us some extra eyes on the street, helping us to prevent or solve crime, and in doing so, help provide additional reassurance to members of the public.”

Phase one of the Whakatane District Council's CCTV works is complete.

'Phase two will focus on an expansion of the CCTV network,” says Tony.

'The total cost of the project was budgeted at $115,000 with The Southern Trust contributing $50,000, The Lion Foundation contributing $25,000 and the council funding the remainder.”

Great to see another Local Council support the campain against disorder by having CCTV cameras operating. I am sure that the Local Whakatane Community Patrols group were involved in bringing this to fruition.
