Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy believes local advertising for directors for Tauranga City Venues Ltd (includes Baypark speedway) and Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd isn't going far enough.
'The city council is advertising on the city website for directors. We don't know where else they are advertising. My concern is we need to get the message out that these positions are running and we are actively looking for strong contenders,” says Murray.
Tauranga City Councillor Murray Guy wants to look further a field for directors than just in the BOP.
'These people aren't down at WINZ.”
The Bay of Plenty attracts a lot of people who are semi-retired and have lot to contribute, says Murray.
His other concern is the wording of the advertisement he saw will discourage capable people from applying. He says the requirement for a tertiary qualification will prevent many otherwise qualified and with the right experience from applying.
Mayor Stuart Crosby says he has similar concerns but doesn't believe it is a barrier.
'There's nothing stopping anyone from putting their name forward,” says Stuart.
'I don't believe not having one should be a barrier. There are many successful business people who do not have any qualifications – except that they are successful.”
