Political amalgamation pushed

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby pushed for further political amalgamation in his 'State of City – 2010” address to the City Partners programme on Thursday morning.
'Within the next five years there is going to be significant changes in the ownership, governance, decision making and management of public land and assets of Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty in comparison to today,” says Stuart.

He says significant changes have occurred in the joining up of the Tauranga City and Western Bay of Plenty District over the last 21 years, and called for 'calm and mature” discussion about further amalgamation.
'I would be prepared to host a gathering of leaders in the community from various sectors to promote a mature discussion about the pros and cons of a reorganisation of local government in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty,” says Stuart.
The speech was delivered to a breakfast meeting of about 150 of the city's business and political leaders at the Sebel on Thursday.
