Rate-paying clock ticking

Up to $40 million could be heading into the Tauranga City Council's bank accounts on Friday when the second rates instalment comes due.
Land and rating information team leader at Tauranga City Council, Jim Taylor says about 30 per cent of rates are still paid by direct debit, but a large number of ratepayers are paying their rates on the day.

'Over the last three or four years the money comes in almost exactly on the due date,” says Jim.
By Monday or Tuesday next week they will know what's in the system and will begin processing penalty warning notices.
'If we wait a month they will still be in the same situation, and we want them to come and talk to us.”
He also wants to hear from people, or the family and friends of people who might apply for a rates rebate. Many who qualify are elderly and might not be aware that they do qualify, says Jim.
