A burst of rain is moving up the nation over the next day but it may be Hawke's Bay that benefits the most from this wet, cooler, sou'easter, says WeatherWatch.co.nz head forecastor Philip Duncan.

"Rainfall totals may approach 50 to 70mm in some places over the next seven days.

"But many other places have just 2 to 15mm coming, along with an Autumnal temperature drop.

"A big high rolls in this weekend with warmer airflows returning by Sunday."

Sunny spells are being forecast for the Bay of Plenty today, with the risk of a light shower out west.

Cloud thickens up in the afternoon then some rain moves in from the west late afternoon or evening. Northwesterly winds.

A high of 22-23 is being predicted for the region.
