Motorists are being asked to avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rain lashes the region.

Police have been called to a number of crashes this morning, including one on State Highway 29, near Soldiers Road and one on the corner of Devonport Road and 12th Ave.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says police are currently at the scene of a crash on SH29, near the bridge near Soldiers Road.

"It looks like one lane is blocked. People should expect delays in the area."

Earlier today, police were called to a crash at the intersection of 12th Ave and Devonport Road.

"It appears to have involved two cars," says a police spokesperson.

"Fortunately nobody was injured and towing has been arranged for the two cars."

A video sent into SunLive shows heavy rain at the time of the crash.

With a heavy rain warning in force for BOP, motorists are being asked to stay off the roads where possible, or to take extra care while driving.

Waka Kotahi regional manager maintenance and operations Rob Campbell says motorists should expect the unexpected and remain alert.

'Avoid unnecessary travel and take care. Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly and there is a chance we may need to close some roads.

'Drive to the conditions and watch out for surface flooding, slips and fallen trees or branches. Check your intended route for hazards or disruptions before setting out, using the Waka Kotahi interactive Journey Planner website (journeys.nzta.govt.nz), and remain alert for unreported hazards.”
