There are 49 new cases of Covid-19 in the community today, with all of these cases in Auckland.
This brings the total number of cases to 725 with 709 in Auckland and 16 in Wellington. There are also four new cases to report in managed isolation and quarantine.
Dr Ashley Bloomfield says the lower cases numbers today are encouraging and show the alert level 4 measures in place are working.
He says the numbers could still bounce around a little.
There are 42 cases in hospital with 8 in North Shore, 19 in Middlemore and 15 Auckland. Six of the cases are in ICU or HDU.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the case numbers moving around is not unusual and was seen last time.
She says there are some positive trends, the rolling day average of cases is decline it is 61 today and was 77 five days ago.
There are also fewer cases that were infectious in the community, of the 49 cases announced today only seven were infectious in the community, says Ardern.
She says the people aren't breaking the rules with most of the exposure events being from visiting a supermarket or dairy.
Cases of in-household transmission would continue to be found, says Ardern, but lockdown is necessary for extinguishing those last chains of transmission.
"If you are a contact, if you have been at a location of interest and advised to stay home as a result you absolutely must do so. It is such an important message."
Ardern announced Northland will move to alert level 3 at 11.59pm tonight.
Earlier: Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield and Minister of Defence Peeni Henare will provide an update on the current Covid-19 outbreak.
They are expected to be live from Wellington at 1pm.
What we know so far:
There are 687 cases of Covid-19 in the current outbreak; 75 new cases were reported yesterday.
There are 32 people in hospital, eight are in the intensive care unit and three are on ventilation.
Auckland Hospital have asked other DHBs to send intensive care nurses to bolster numbers.
Auckland and Northland are in Alert Level 4, while the rest of New Zealand is in Alert Level 3.
Northland will find out this afternoon if it will shift to Level 3, pending the outcome of wastewater testing in the region.

Trying to convince everybody with a rolling average. It’s not a “short, sharp lockdown” as she said a couple of weeks ago. It will not be “stamped out” as she said a couple of weeks ago. Pure arrogance.

... after all the criticism from overseas and even here, where the consensus was that it is impossible to eradicate the virus, it looks like we may be getting there. If the population co-operate it certainly CAN be done. If nobody is available to the virus for infection, it MUST die; it cannot live without a host. It is a high risk strategy (because ONE person could scuttle it) but if we can do it, it will be fantastic. In effect, resumption of normality that the rest of the World seems to have given up on. High vaccination and no travel without it, plus very strict border control could see us through it.
