WeatherWatch.co.nz's latest rainfall totals suggest 500 to 800mm is quite possible over the next five days in the north west corner of the South Island, maybe more.
These are significant totals and will likely lead to slips and flooding warns the weather organisation.
"Gusty N to NE winds will also develop over the coming days in northern NZ with gusts to gale force and some heavy rain there too.
"This weekend this wet set up moves through but then a showery westerly and southerly may also be in the mix.
"In Australia not much is happening but a westerly change is moving in for the southern coastline and that turns colder southerly this weekend."
