Tauranga’s streets will come alive with music, colour and celebration on Sunday, when the city’s Sikh community hosts its annual Nagar Kirtan parade.
The procession, which runs from 11am to 2pm, will depart from the Gurudwara Sikh Sangat, at 43 Burrows St and travel through nearby streets before returning to Burrows St.
The Sikh Tauranga Parade celebrates the birth of the 10th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and is one of the most important events on the Sikh calendar.
Gurudwara Sikh Sangat Tauranga president Puran Singh said Guru Gobind Singh Ji was remembered as the founder of the Khalsa Panth and a champion of equality, justice and courage.
“The event brings the community together in remembrance of Guru Ji’s teachings of selfless service, unity, and standing up for truth, while welcoming people of all backgrounds to share in this spiritual and cultural celebration,” Singh said.

Singh said the annual parade was a way of sharing Sikh values and hospitality with the wider community. There were an estimated 10,000 Sikhs in the Bay of Plenty, many of whom were expected for Sunday’s big bright and vibrant parade. But the invitation was widened.
“Anyone and everyone are welcome to join us,” Singh said.
The devotional procession would be led by the Panj Pyare (the Five Beloved Ones), with continuous singing of sacred hymns (Shabad Kirtan) from the Guru Granth Sahib as the parade moves through the streets. Traditional Gatka martial arts performances, colourful floats, and devotees dressed in traditional attire will also feature.
Members of the public are invited to watch the parade and take part in the celebrations, with free food (langar) offered along the route as an expression of the Sikh principle of selfless service.

The parade will travel from Burrows St to 14th Ave, along Devonport Rd, then via 11th Ave, Fraser St and 13th Ave before finishing back at the Sikh Temple on Burrows St.
Rolling road closures will be in place between 11am and 3pm as the procession passes, with roads reopening progressively.
Tauranga City Council, police and traffic management staff are supporting the event to ensure public safety.

Hopefully Destiny church members keep away. Leave them in peace.
Happy time

We went to watch and it was colourful and joyous. The management of traffic appeared to work well with only minor hold ups and it was advertised so people could plan a route .
A nice touch was spectators being offered a selection of cold soft drinks
And yes hopefully no self appointed Brian Tamaki racist mob to be seen. certainly none where I was watching
How sad...

....that some writers will wish to 'pour scorn' on others.....as far as I can see, Destiny Church and Brian Tamaki you mention, has no involvement whatsoever with celebratory and legal events which do not involve direct family values and are not likely to incite violence.
No I am not involved with nor have any connection with Destiny Church, however, I have disdain for those who choose to believe it is solely a 'racist' group...no.
They have beliefs and desires which seem to be very specific and will not be swayed by those wishing to not believe there is another view.....a more conservative approach.
There are always views from different sides, personally I do not see this organisation as anything different than a balance....

I hear what your saying but I have to disagree with you on this one sorry.
. . . not likely to incite violence . . .
Trampling, ripping up and burning other countries and organizations flags is absolutely incitement. A haka used as they do is a threat not respect. Storming children's book readings . . . sorry but like a lot of others I cannot see it as a balance. There are a lot of other ways to get their 'Christian' message through. The Sikhs were respectfully handing out cold drinks. Why couldn't Tamaki's bunch hand out a sausage sizzle with a Christian message on serviettes . . . Or leave others events alone and host their own. Their in-your-face actions and thuggery have zero attractiveness.
My opinion.
Haka

So Destiny Church blocked a similar parade with in their face Haka an oblivious attempt of intimidation and chanted "This is New Zealand not India"
So Destiny Church targeted the South Auckland legal and proper Shikh parade because of their religion they were celebrating and their clearly race with the chant. Police had to act .
So what is that then what would you call this behavior ? I call it disgraceful
Im pleased Destiny Church didn't t disrupt this parade for their publicity stunt they are famous for and members previously in court. Sad indeed on them .
Spoke to soon
