Problem tree for chop

A cedar growing next to an Otumoetai house on council land is going to be cut down and the council will share the cost.

The council Strategy and Policy Committee vote was originally split over the issue, but chairman, Deputy Mayor David Stewart changed his vote on Tuesday, August 18.
After hearing resident John Phillipson's submission about life under the tree, councillors agreed the tree was an inappropriate one for the site, but were divided about who should pay for it.
Some were happy to let the Phillipson family pay the $1000 or so, for its removal, because they had offered. But the more civic minded took the stance that as it is a council tree causing the problems, the council should help pay.
The tree, which is in good health, could reach a height of 60 metres and is growing only 2.4m from the Phillipson home.
It's growing on a small reserve section beside a roadside transformer. There is some doubt over whether it is actually on council land, but neither party wants to pay a surveyor.
