The food bank is not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about funeral services.

But a donation from Legacy Trust, which owns Legacy Funerals, has seen $2500 worth of honey donated to Tauranga Community Foodbank this month, helping to sweeten things up a little for families in need.

Locally sourced honey from BeeNZ in Katikati was donated to the foodbank, which was gratefully received.

Further benefiting the community, each pot of honey also saw $5.00 per pot given to the Tauranga Girls’ College Volleyball Team who will be travelling to Australia in December to participate in the Australian Secondary School Championship.

Nicki Goodwin from Tauranga Community Foodbank says they are delighted to receive the donation, making a change from some of the other canned and dry good staples typically received.

“Honey is such a versatile product, it can be used in baking, to sweeten a hot drink or bowl of porridge, to make a honey lemon drink to ease a sore throat, the list goes on. But it’s a luxury condiment not all families can afford.”

It’s not the first time Legacy has donated to the food bank due to their unique business model.

Legacy Funerals is a household name for its bespoke funeral services that support the grieving process and keep the stories of loved ones alive once they pass.

What is lesser known is that Legacy Funerals is owned by Legacy Trust, a registered charitable trust committed to giving back. This means that profits from its services go right back into the community.

“With our community’s help, since we were formed in 2007 we have gifted over $3.5 million to charities, schools, local organisations and many other incredible causes, truly enabling people who have passed to create a lasting legacy,” says Legacy Funerals general manager Kiri Randall.

“This generosity is only possible because of the choice families have made in choosing Legacy Funerals. Our costs are comparable to others, yet we offer added value through benefits to our local communities.”

Some of the other charities and organisations to have received support include: Waipuna Hospice, Surf Lifesaving Bay of Plenty, Parkinson’s Association, Riding for the Disabled, local high schools, Tauranga Foodbank, Tauranga Arts Festival, and the Foundation for Youth Development.

Families thinking about planning ahead for their funeral may want to consider pre-planning with Legacy and get the benefits of bespoke bereavement care while also gifting back to their community.
