The two major political parties hold opposing views on tax cuts. Labour says cutting taxes costs people more, whereas National says New Zealanders deserve tax relief.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins says minimum wage increases do more to help families than tax cuts.

Campaigning at Whānau Manaaki in Porirua today, Hipkins says during Labour's time in government, the minimum wage has increased by $7/hr.

"A minimum wage worker, through a tax cut will get 25 cents an hour, whereas under us they've got nearly $7 an hour extra. And so increasing incomes is the way you help families to really get ahead. You don't get much out of tax cuts."

Hipkins says tax cuts cost people more through reduced government services.

At a policy announcement in Auckland today, National leader Christopher Luxon reiterated his commitment to giving New Zealanders a tax break.

"We are going to deliver tax relief to working New Zealanders. We think it is grossly unfair ... it's the unfairness in our tax system. I guarantee you we're going to do it. What's genius about this scheme is we're reprioritising savings from wasteful spending within this government, we are raising revenue - of which one piece of it is the foreign buyer tax.

"I'm deeply committed to delivering tax relief for New Zealanders, they deserve a tax break... I'm going to do it on 15 October, watch me."
