The Coalition Government has ended the 'Ute Tax' and Clean Car Discount for all vehicles registered after December 31 2023, marking a New Year's victory for taxpayers, farmers, and tradies.
“Scrapping the 'Ute Tax' as part of the National-ACT coalition agreement was a priority in our 100-day plan, and we have delivered on that commitment," says Transport Minister Simeon Brown.
"The days of unfairly taxing our farmers and tradies are now behind us.
“The previous government's scheme was inequitable and fiscally irresponsible, offering subsidies to individuals buying electric vehicles, while imposing taxes on hardworking farmers and tradies who have little choice about the type of vehicle they need for work.
“The scheme was designed to achieve fiscal neutrality, with the 'Ute Tax' charges covering the rebates and administration costs. However, more was paid out in rebates than was received in charges, with taxpayers footing the bill.
“Our Coalition Government is committed to increasing the uptake of electric vehicle ownership by supercharging EV charging infrastructure, which is one of the most significant barriers for people taking up an EV. This will have a much more long-term impact rather than the former Government’s subsidy scheme.”
The 'Ute Tax' and applications for the Clean Car Discount have ended for all vehicles registered from 11.59 pm on December 31, 2023.

There should never have been a selective TAX on the productive users giving tax breaks to over prices EV cars.
Either EVs can stand on there own or they can't, its not about climate as they are worse environmentally based on studies.

The flaw in the EV solution is batteries and I think that's what you were alluding to when you said: "...they are worse environmentally based on studies." Fortunately, battery technology is advancing exponentially and within the next 10-15 years we can reasonably expect this to be solved. (Or alternatives, like hydrogen fuel cells will be much better than the current state of the art, where the energy density is a problem.) There is no argument that emissions from EVs, whether electric or hydrogen powered, will be far less than from fossil fuels, and, if we manage not to exterminate ourselves in a nuclear holocaust, we can certainly solve the climate problem.
Farmers and tradies lol

That's a joke. I work in a place where the rich dude managers who would have previously bought sports cars to flaunt their lifestyle are now buying utes and monster SUVs. They're certainly not farmers or tradies and they don't live on lifestyle blocks. The car park looks like a Bunnings car park only with cleaner vehicles.
