UPDATE 2.16PM: State Highway 5 south of Rotorua has reopened following an earlier crash.

The crash, involving a car and a motorcycle, was reported to police at 12.45pm.

A motorcyclist has been transported to hospital with moderate to serious injuries, says a police spokesperson.

"Police thank motorists for their patience while the road was blocked."

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 5, south of Rotorua.

The crash, involving a car and a motorcycle, was reported to police at 12.45pm.

"The motorcyclist has serious injuries," says a police spokesperson.

"The road is blocked between Waikite Valley Road and Old Waiatapu Road.

"Motorists are advised to expect delays."

Diversions are as follows: Northbound traffic: Left onto Waikite Valley Rd, right onto Hossack Rd, Corbett Rd, right onto Tumunui Rd, left onto SH5. Southbound: in reverse.
