A full week of golf

Rodger Bagshaw is reporting on the week that was at Waihi Golf Club and says they've had a full week of golf.

All remaining Waihi Golf Club Sections completed their Opening Days to get the season rolling.

Monday Vets

Held their Season Opening Day last Monday with a great turnout of 51 players.

The weather couldn’t have been better, and the section is looking forward to an active programme this year. The day’s competition was that the players were divided into random teams of four, with the three best stableford scores counting on each hole.

The winning team on 131 points were Judy Saunders, Jenny O’Dwyer, Mark Morgan (Sherwood Park), and Brian Robinson, while in second place on 130 was Ken Mustard, Denise Morgan, Jane Wordley, and Andrew McLennan.

Nine hole section

[The club] also held their Season Opening Day this week, and on a glorious day the competition was for a four-man Ambrose.

The winning team was Glen Bennet, Eleanor Koedyke, Tu Tangila, and Margaret Meldrum, with a total nett of 26.8. Next on 27.0 were John Twemlow, John Mangu, Jill Mason, and Alison Turney.

At the conclusion a delicious shared lunch was enjoyed by the players.

The winners of the Summer Cup (for the best 3 rounds of 8 available over the summer break) were presented, with Val McLoughlin winning the ladies, and John Vautier the men’s.

Wednesday Ladies

The traditional Geraldine Riggir Trophy was played for on the Season’s Opening Day this week.

This is a best nett competition, and the field was blitzed by a top 64 nett by Karen Lee, With Annette Hetherington in a worthy second place with 69 nett. Next all on nett 70 were Wendy Matutinovich, Mavis Bruce, Avon Gordon, Sharlene Stewart, and Rae Brown.

The Hidden holes was won by Avo Gordon with 9 points.

Thursday Men

The morning haggled could be described as overwhelmed with Brian Robinson having 45 points, while Errol Millar continues his outstanding run with 41 in second place.

Wayne Green was next with 40, and the occasional golfer Bob Baunton with 39. Jock Stronach, Stephen Bailey, and Willie Lynch all had 38 points.

In the afternoon haggle the scene was the same as the morning with Kevan Stewart also having an outstanding 45 points, while Wilson McGillivray, Mark Hope, and Dwayne O’Flaherty all followed with 41 points.

Peter Bramble had 40, and David Campbell 39. Terry Gerbich and Bryce Bevin had 37.

Saturday Ladies

The week of magnificent scores keeps on happening, with Martine Milicich scoring a personal best 61 nett to win the Merle Board nett at the Sections Opening Day event.

Karen May also scored well for second with 66 nett, Jane Wordley had 69. Michelle Libby, Catherine Blake, and Phillipa Harvey all had 71’s.

Saturday Men

In the Morning Haggle Division 1, John Libby with a nett 67, snuck in ahead of Alan Sarjant on 68, with Daryll Denyer and Nigel Sanderson next on 69. Alex Standfield came in on 70.

The Division 2, stood out with more great scores. Rhys Margan scored a nett 64 to sneak ahead of Stephen Bailey on 65, and Wayne Green with 66. Mark Mora and Tim Parish both had nett 69’s, while Tom Wallace finished with nett 70.

The Afternoon Haggle also had some hot scoring, with Jethro Meares being the top scorer with 64 nett.

Close behind was Murray Butterworth with 65, then Bryce Bevin on 66, and Mark Hume with 67. Graeme Culton had a nett 69, then Alistair Cochrane, Rex Knight, Terry Gerbich, and Richard Taitoko all finished on 70 nett.
