Fire emergency services have extinguished a fire at Sulphur Point.
“Looks like a fire at the port,” says SunLive reader Shane Wicksteed.
“I was coming ashore and saw the fire. It was quite big.
‘A lot of grey smoke and black smoke coming out from behind the containers at Sulphur Point.
“The fire brigade and ambulance turned up but it looks like the port put the fire out quick.”
Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson Hayley Prince says they responded to an incident at 11.53am, with a fire truck from the Tauranga station attending the scene.
“On arrival we found a fire that appeared to be in the turbo of a straddle lifter.”
The fire has now been extinguished.
“We have since left the scene,” says Hayley.
The Tauranga Container Terminal facilities at Sulphur Point Wharf utilise a fleet of 18 straddle carriers within the container terminal.
