Organisers of the Egg-Stravaganza in Te Puke on Saturday are rapt with the success of the community Easter art event.

“It was a fabulous collaboration between the Harvest Church, the Te Puke Toy Library and EPIC Te Puke,” says EPIC Te Puke’s Rebecca Larsen.

The EPIC Egg-Stravaganza – Easter Sculpture Trail & Fair ran from 9 am-1 pm in Jubilee Park, Te Puke, with people enjoying food, entertainment, donkey rides, market stalls, face painting and a visit from the Easter Bunny who seems to also be very good at speeding off along country lanes on a unicycle.

“Beautiful blue skies, very well attended by the community, [and] the art along the Te Ara Kahikatea Trail was fantastic.’

Participants could bike, walk, run or hop their way down the Te Puke Te Ara Kahikatea Pathway trail – a 4km loop track – while admiring Easter Sustainable Art Sculptures and completing a bike bingo card to go in the draw to win prizes on the day.

“The winning art was the Rubbish Yard Chicken, which was a chicken made from all sorts of scrap pieces and materials,” says Rebecca.

Winner of the My Ride Te Puke Hurricane Mountain Bike was 12-year-old Alexis Turnbull from Papamoa.

The art trail also included a giant five-foot high rabbit made out of wire.

There were also giant bugs made by students from Te Puke Intermediate and Creative Te Puke made fish from metal. 

“Hung in trees, they made beautiful sounds in the wind,” says Rebecca.

Children and staff from 4Woods Early Learning Centre used all kinds of seed and flower heads to create their entry – a large amazing sustainable Easter egg.

Rebecca says ‘Nuit Blanche’ – White Night – an international arts festival inspired her, where a city comes together for one night of art, performance and music.

“It just gets everybody out looking at art all at once and the city comes alive. I just love the idea of bringing people together, out to see art …there’s a real buzz.”

She says Harvest Church ran egg hunts every hour which were very popular with children. 

“Such a great vibe, very relaxed, happy families, lots of fun,” says Rebecca.

“A lovely day for a bike ride or walk.”

She says that Te Puke Toy Library repainted a life-sized cow which was donated to them by Te Puke Veterinary Centre.

“It was painted with spring flowers and hidden Easter eggs. Very beautiful with gold horns.”

Rebecca says The Menz Shed Te Puke have donated their bird boxes to EPIC Te Puke to sell in support of their event costs.
